My Photos Library shows 'Date Modified' as October 7, the day I upgraded to Catalina. I use iCloud Photos Library, which seems to work (I see photos from my phone showing up on my Mac) but the Mac Photos Library is not updating. Anyone else with this issue and any fixes?

I have an 2 iMacs (2017 and 2013), one running Mojave (2013) and the other Catalina (2017), any changes with my photos work flawlessly with Mojave and are updated on my iOS devices. Photo's do update on Catalina however my folder structure is a complete mess.

I have my albums organised by year and event (not using any sub folders). I've checked photos via the browser on iCloud and again the structure looks fine, the issue is obviously with Catalina. I'll disable iCloud on the Catalina Mac and manage my photos from Mojave until Apple comes up with a fix.

Tempted to run a repair on Catalina Photos, however I've seen a few posts where this has not worked. Manually reorganising by photos would be an option if I didn't have so many (150k photos)

Hoping this will be fixed in 15.1.

Just to add further to the mess, when clicking on a photo within Catalina to add to an existing album, or create a new one, the list of albums is in a completely different order to the list of albums on the left hand side... very strange! If you are contemplating Catalina and value your photo collection my advice is to wait until Apple sort it out.

Repairing the Photos Library didn't fix the issue. And when I right click Photos Library and select Show Package Contents, it shows new photos in Originals that are later than the October 7 modified date of the Photos Library (the newer photos even have Date Modified newer than October 7 but the Originals folder has a Date Modified of October 7). Strange...

I spoke with Apple Support, who had me do a safe reboot and then restart, which prompted a “Restore” of the Photo Library. That didn’t fix it but the Photos app now shows “Uploading 47,936 items”. I hope that just means it’s syncing with iCloud Photo Library and not actually uploading all of those. Fingers crossed the library will start updating after this.

As a side note, I notice Time Machine is doing a huge backup (the size of my Photos Library), so maybe it actually is updating (still shows October 7 for the time being, though)

I have a Photos Library of 512Gb on my iMac. When I saw this post I checked and saw the same, the last update is Oct 7th. I download photos from my camera and iPhone on a daily basis, sometimes up to a 100+ of them. To be safe, besides using Time Machine I also move those photos to an external drive just for the photos library.

What I have noticed since using Catalina ... the spinning wheel almost all the time. I did not have this problem before Catalina. Once it opens in Photos it will not start with the most recent photo that was imported but years before ... YEARS ... I have to move the slider down to the bottom of the screen of course to where it should be.

I have an organized file system within the Photos, mostly by subject or name of people or dogs. Sometimes when I click a photo or a small group of them to slide over into their folder, the spinning wheel appears.

I was also not happy losing access to iPhoto. Even years after Apple changed to Photos ... I'd still have photos that had the yellow triangle after they had been imported from iPhoto correctly. Now I can't get to those photos except from my external drive which is nothing more than a list of photo file names with no folders.

I guess I will wait for Catalina to update to where Photos is back to operation like it should.

I uploaded a picture to the Mac Photos app and that seemed to finally trigger the sync to finish

I’ve given up and turned off iCloud photos on Catalina and I’m managing my photos through Mojave on another Mac. Hoping 15.2 will bring the fix.

Latest version of Catalina/Photos has added nice touch with button switching thumbnails between square and full aspect ratio. Love it.

Toggling the photos being stored locally or just in iCloud & restarting the photos app forces the photos to update and download locally on your Mac. On my clean install I had to do this about 20 times over the course of 2 days to ensure my 40GB photo library fully downloaded & synced.

Exact problem I am having. Now to backup photos from my iPhoneX, I use Image Capture to copy all the new photos to my Mac's local drive and then drag these files from the local drive into Photos' library (stored on an NAS). Huge hassle and I have to wonder why Apple hasn't fixed this huge bug yet.
