I was using Google Backup & Sync to upload my Photos Library to Google Photos as a backup to iCloud Drive.

Google has since forced migration to Drive for desktop and photos are no longer uploading. Looks like Drive for desktop no longer supports .heic (Backup & Sync did).

I would rather not change my iPhone photo format to .jpg given the storage savings with .heic. Has anyone gotten around this?

I recently started using Google Photos, and simply migrated my Apple photo library over to Google Photos. Now I'm trying to learn how to make sure the metadata can be preserved, while storing these images onto a local archive outside of Photos. Then I plan on stockpiling more new images in a newly empty Apple Photos library, and when it gets large, transfer them over again. I figure this does not not provide an answer to your question, but thought I'd mention where I'm at with this process.

One clarification on this is that Drive for desktop should be able to upload .heic to Google Photos just like Backup & Sync did - the compatibility issue I mentioned was just that you can't view .heic files in Google Drive (which isn't what I'm trying to do anyway).

That said, in case anyone else is experiencing this issue, there are others also experiencing the same and Drive support has asked folks to submit feedback via the app:

Google have requested that any user affected by this issue leave in-product feedback quoting the reference b_205138801 at the start of the text.
  1. On your task bar, click Google Drive
  2. Click the Gear icon
  3. Scroll down and select Send feedback
Start the text with b_205138801 followed by any observations you would like to share.

Same problem here. I’ve reported it as well but this issue has existed since at least October when a thread on Google support also brought this up and it has yet to be fixed.

Meanwhile I subscribed to Google one only to discover too late that this issue exists. Very disappointed.

Reviving this old thread because looks like it’s finally working now. Google drive is backing up the photo library finally.

EDIT: Ah my bad it was backing up photos in the photos folder (including HEIC files) but doesn’t seem to work still for the Photos library.
