Does it work when syncing via USB? Not having iLife 09 it's impossible to test here, other than to say iphoto 11 works fine for me with iTunes 10.5 and wifi sync.

One other clarification - are you talking about syncing albums and such down to the phone or importing photos into iPhoto? I don't think the latter works over wifi even with iPhoto11 other than via PhotoStream.

I don't think wi-fi sync works with iPhoto, not the way it used to with USB, where you opened iPhoto and the iDevice showed up on the side to import the photos.

I think Apple's intention was for people to get the photos from their device into iPhoto is using iCloud and the Photostream. That's how mine works: all my photos taken with my iPhone show up in iPhoto when I open the program up, I don't have to manually sync and import.

I don't think you'll have this feature with iLife 09'. As you've mentioned, you can still connect via USB and import. I think there are other services that might do something similar, like keep a folder of photos sync'd from your iDevice to your computer wirelessly, but I don't think you'll be able to do it natively without upgrading to iLife 11'.

As @wwooden mentions, even iPhoto '11 doesn't import from the iphone over wifi like it does via USB, so you're not really missing that feature since it doesn't seem to exist in the newer version.

What you miss in iPhoto '09 is iCloud PhotoStream integration. I use this and appreciate not needing to worry about importing photos; it happens automatically. I don't think you can get this feature without upgrading.
