I went on tour with an orchestra in China over New Year. Had an amazing time, although as a tour it was completely insane -- in 14 days we did 11 concerts in 10 different cities! On top of that, our first concert was literally one hour after we arrived, having been travelling for 26 hours by plane and coach! Perhaps that explains the half-crazed faces in these photographs...

Let me know what you think!

Cheers

Nutter,

what a pleasure to see your photographs of China. I started making notes of favorites but there were too many--got to mention, though, the lantern market in Guanghou, and in Shanwei the small street with pendants overhead and the happy children. Hohhot was very interesting, then the wonderful overview of the Great Wall.

Thanks for sharing your trip--it must be the grandest trip you've ever made? Your pictures are, in my opinion, what the photo gallery was meant to be rather than all the inane dock and system and set up photos it has become. But then I'm cynical.;)

I'm glad you liked them, JDar.

Those kids in Shanwei were so sweet. They followed us around for about an hour, saying "hello" and "welcome to our school" and shaking our hands. One of them showed me his English textbook. They obviously don't get a lot of westeners in that town.

In the evening they crowded around the side gates of the concert hall like groupies -- a surreal sight. Sadly, I didn't see a single one of them in the audience. I suspect the ticket price (expensive even by western standards, something which really baffled me) was far more than they could have afforded.

PM me if you want full size copies of any of the photos, I'd be happy to oblige!

Those pictures are stunning. What camera did you use? Also do you have any wallpaper sized pictures? I love "lonely boat", "bamboo" and "at the top".

Two things:

1) I'm heading to Asia myself in less than three weeks. Over two months I'll be in Thailand, China and Japan. Seeing these pics is making me even more excited!

2) That site was done on a Mac. Sexy site. I want a Mac now. NOW! But I'm going on a vacatio.

That sign was quite brilliant. Hilarious signs are everywhere, though. Here are some others I saw...

(On the ferry) "No photos on military installations."

(Outside a dressing room) "Resting and fixing for visiting impersonators"

(In a toilet) "Prohibition against the bowels. Defecate please go upstairs."

ieani, those photos were taken on a Pentax ME Super. Proper old school! Most of them were taken with the standard Pentax 50mm lens, a few of them with a (very average) Vivatar 28mm lens. The developers did a pretty good job of the scanning. I'm desparate to get a digital SLR, but I can't afford one at the moment... oh, the life of a student...

I'd be happy to email you full size copies of the photos you like, which you can use as desktop pictures. Just PM me with your email address.

Those photos are great. I'll probably be going to China some time during the year, I can't wait. I heard everything is really cheap over there, is that true?

Very cheap, unless you eat or drink in hotels and posh bars.

Metro in Beijing - US$0.7
Large bottle of beer (Tsingtao) from a shop - US$0.4
Rickshaw for five minute journey - US$0.7
Taxi for ten minute journey - US$2.5
Big Mac meal - US$1.9
Lunch in a Chinese cafeteria, including beer - US$2.5

One tip - if you go to markets, you are expected to haggle. You should aim to pay about 40% of the price that they ask for. Offer about 10-20% of the price and take it from there. I'm not kidding. If they don't just laugh at you, chances are they'll take what you're offering if you start to walk away. Don't feel guilty about this, the prices they quote you are vastly inflated (by their standards) because you are a tourist.

Damn that is cheap! That's about 11 times less than what a beer costs here! (€3.80) Nice one for the haggling tips tips. I'll make sure to use them.

Nice pics. I like the "at the top" picture of the great wall...too bad that girl was in the way or that would have been an amazing picture (unless u plan for that)
I too am going to China in May for 2 week with my school, kinda like a mini study abroad.

My favourite picture is 'mother and child', because of the expressions on their faces, and the way the child is holding her mum's bag. It's just a shame that motorbike happened to pass exactly as I took the picture.

Those are all quite nice! It sounds like you had a good time, despite likely being incredibly exhausted from the hectic schedule. I'm jealous that you were able to go to the Great Wall!

Wow nice pictures! I had the chance to go to China this year but my parents told me no. Instead they and my sister are going while I stay here at college. I really want to go there someday!

Hey, Nutter,it's amazing to see all the pics you took from China:) ,although I have been to Guangzhou for several times, but I didnot find those beautiful sceneries in your eyes~~

It seems that you have stayed in Guangdong Provice for so many days, because u took so many pics in Guangdong. :)

Frankly speaking, what I found in your all pics is the passion, all the children, all the people, in normal life~~~~

Appreciate them continously...

Ah,by the way ,I'm from Tianjin,China, ever heard of that city??It's the neighbour of the capital of China--Beijing~~Welcome to Tianjin next time, hehe~~~:D

As a gift to you, I translate all the names of cities you went into Chinese Language...

1. Jangmen and Guangzhou(江门&广州)
2. Gaoming(高明)
3. On the ferry (渡船上)
4. Zhongshan island (中山陵)
5. Shanghai and Hangzhou (上海&杭州)
6. Guangzhou(again) (广州)
7. Shanwei (汕尾)
8. Still in Shanwei
9. Hohhot-Inner Mongolia (内蒙古)(I donnot know what's "Hohhot",does it equal to "HOT"?)
10. Beijing and the Forbidden City (北京&紫禁城)
11. The Great Wall (长城)

There is a saying:"He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.“(不到长城非好汉!)

I actually like the juxtaposition with the motorbike. *shrug* Just me I suppose.

But yeah, my two favorite photos would be 'mother and child' and 'lonely boat.'

The pictures are great and that's a nice clean looking site!

Oh and... the guy on the left of the 'euphoria' pic at the Great Wall is quite cute ;)
