Photos of your Scouts Pinewood Derby Car...

It's that time of year again. Yes, I am talking about Cub Scout Pinewood Derby (at least here in the US.)


My 7 year old and I designed this car using Sketchup, and I did most of the "work" as I like hime with all of his fingers. He helped with sanding, painting, etc...

The race over here was yesterday, I'm not sure if it's the same for them however.

Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? When I was in cub scouts, my dad showed me how to use the saw and made me cut my own car...kids these days.

I'm not sure 7 year olds and automated saws and such are a very good combination.

To each their own, but my father taught me how to use a band saw properly at that age. I made 3 derby cars at 7, 8, and 9 under my dad's supervision of course. Also learned how to bore out holes for authorized weights, etc.

He was also my "Pack leader" and would race kids' derby cars for fun with the untouched pine block with wheels attached. He won most of them somehow.

The race is this Saturday, so we'll see how it does.

I dont own any fancy woodworking equipment, so the crafting was done with a hand held jig saw and hammer/chisels. I know my sons abilities, and let him try. I decided he wasn't ready to use sharp tools, so he was involved where appropriate..... Maybe next year I'll feel he is able to use more of the forming tools himself.

When I was in the scouts, I had a painted, sanded block with wheels on it. I thought it was so cool - like making your real own car like the protagonist in Gismos & Gadgets did. All the other kids my age had spaceship looking cars. I was around 7. So were the other kids. I felt like everyone else had cheated. I don't think I ever went back...

I'll have to see if I can track down any photos, but my family always went for the out-of-the-box approachs. I don't remember who made which ones at this point, but we still have the following cars at my parent's house (between me, my two brothers, my dad, and my sisters who made them for fun):

Pickle
Space Shuttle
Swiss Cheese
Conestoga Wagon (that was too slow to even bother racing, but looked awesome)
Piano
Football Stadium
Pencil
Swiss Army Knife

and more I can't remember. We rarely won the races (my Space Shuttle got 2nd place), but we almost always won the Most Creative award.
