Morning all,

I have moved to a small SSD Mac Mini. On my previous iMac, my Photo library was stored internally. Due to the size of my Photos library, I've now moved the library to an external HD (prior to my last iMac, this is how I used to have it set up on my old Intel C2D iMac).

What I have noticed however, is that this HD is frequently spinning up and doing 'something'. It did this 3 times during a one hour period the other day, running for about 10 minutes at a time.

I do have Shared Albums setup on my iPhone, which then obviously appear on the Mac, but nothing is being updated, or has been updated, for a good few weeks. Photos is never open either, unless I'm using it. Because it's on a removable volume, I keep the app closed *just incase* there's a disk ejection (I do have a back up, but even so). My Photo library is stored on the HD and not in the Cloud.

I'm no stranger to a Mac, but equally, I'm no 'boffin' under the hood either. What I did do was run Activity Monitor and just tried typing 'Photo' to see what came up the next time it randomly started doing whatever it is that it was doing. This is what appeared:

I don't really know what that means, however, the CPU time of the highlighted activity was quite high. So, I clicked and 'Force Quit' the activity to see what would happen. Approx. 10 seconds passed and then the HD stopped. I opened Photos, no damage or difference to the library, and the random spinning up stopped for a while, but I then noticed the next day that it was doing the same again.

I have repaired the library just incase there is an issue there, but it has made no difference. I'm not really sure what to do now, or what I might need to try to further troubleshoot. I have taken to shutting the Mac down as, although it's not noisy, you can hear the HD-and once you've heard it, you end up always hearing it. A little online search found people with issues going right back to 2009.

My library is approx. 420GB, and I have left it open in an attempt to let it do it's thing (scanning, updating) as I appreciate its gone from Catalina to Sonoma-but it just hasn't stopped this process. I'd like to get to the bottom of it because I don't like hearing the HD spinning up all the time for either no reason, or a very simple/silly reason. I figure something is stuck somewhere, but not really sure what to do now.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks,
Dan

As long as you are running an external spinning platter of rust you are going to be disappointed. When you do a search, the Mac will wake it up and system will pause. It routinely does house cleaning chores that will wake it up and the system will pause. I used to do the same, use one as a Time Machine, and it would wind up several times a day. External SSDs aren't that expensive. Old style hard drives have their place, in a NAS for example (I run 2), but more and more they are being left behind.

Reports online seem to vary between it taking minutes to days to run the analysis, I only started shutting the Mac off a few days ago-which means its been 'on' since around the 29th of December.

A bit more digging and reading of a few Apple community threads suggested that unchecking the Memories/Events/Notification within Photos>Settings made a difference to at least one person who had the same issue as me. So, that's what I've done today to see if it makes a difference.

In relation to old rusty HD's, the plan is to move to an SSD when money is right-i'm looking at the Satechi Mac mini Hub with space for SSD plus a 'x'GB SSD, so the library will move to that eventually. A 1TB SSD will accommodate mine and my partners libraries, a 2TB for future proofing. My Media is all stored on an external HD, but I'd need a 4TB SSD for that, and they're quite expensive. Weekly back-up is run on both HD's so I've got a back up if things go wrong.

In relation to external SSD's, any recommendations? And what's the lifespan of an SSD? My iMac was a 1.12TB Fusion and I never had any issues with that in it's nearly 10 years use: I'm presuming they're a 'safe' bet?
