Photos - Places has vanished

When I first copied some photos from iphoto to my ipad, I had photos, events and places as options. The places option had a map of the world with markers where I had taken some recent photos (camera has GPS). Since then I have had to restore a few times but the same photos are still there but the "places" option has gone. The GPS tagging info is still visible in iphoto - although I am still using iphoto08.

There is one similar query on this forum but no answers?
