Are there any significant differences between these two versions? I mainly work with digital photos.

Photoshop CS vs. 7.0

I prefer both PS 7 and PS 8 (CS v1). I found no significant reason to upgrade to CS 2 (PS 9). 
CS 1 (PS 8) has the "healing brush" which I find rather useful. There are some other benefits, however its a personal call.

Plus a number of new and improved tools... I won't go on because I just found this article which goes into far more detail than I ever could.

I have PS 7 because the higher the versions go, the more ram they hog. I stick with PS 7 and After Effects 6.5 because I can have them both open at the same time without slowdowns. The reason I upgraded to 6.5 from 6.0 was because of some cross platform problem and they didnt have 6 no more so I bought 6.5 from 99 bucks. I think you should only get CS 2 if there is a feature you really need to make your productivity better.
I've just installed CS2 ( PS 9), benefit of xmas gift, so haven't had a chance to compare (vs. 8,7), but the "healing brush" seems to have added a couple more features "red eye" among them which has been over due, imo, though iPhoto and other apps have addressed this to a degree.maya said:I prefer both PS 7 and PS 8 (CS v1). From what I've heard, CS2 doesn't offer much over CS1, so there's no point in upgrading there if you don't want to.
I've found CS to be much cleaner than 7, and there are several improvements, one of which being the healing brush (very useful in touching up portraits), and some other basic interface and file management stuff that just makes the whole process smoother.

I have compared 7 and 8. Version 8 has some cool filters and improved file browser, but no reasons for me to upgrade. I mainly work with digital photos for the Web.
The interface is more user friendly in CS than 7, in my opinion. We use PS 7 at school, but I've worked with both CS and CS2 at home.
What CS has that 7 doesn't (things I notice and use often):
-Type on a path - draw a path and place type on it. 7 can't do this.
-Filter gallery makes things a lot easier.
CS2 seems to provide more filters and better RAW handling. Plus, Adobe Bridge is a lot faster than the File Browser.

I've upgraded my photoshop since Ver 5.

The interface and layer options have some enhancements.
Admtedly there isn't a giant leap but 8 is very good and stable. I like File Browser. Its really useful fast and responsive.
CS2 sucks ass. They ruined photoshop, it seems to have memory holes, is sluggish.
With both 7 & CS I hardly ever saw the spinning wheel of death, even when a project amassed a large number of layers.
With CS2 it stops up on you and SPOD is seen very often, even when selecting somthing fairly simple like a text layer.
After paying for the upgrade from CS - CS2 I feel really pis*ed off at Adobe. Even fantastic FileBrowser from CS has been replaced with Adobe Bridge 1. An extremely slow and labourious program. The benefit of file browser was its speed, take that away and over complicate somthing unecessarily and hey presto you have Bridge.
Also Version Cue sucks ass, its like spyware attaching itself to the top menu bar and monitoring you. What a waste of resources.

I have used all the versions of PS (from 1 to CS2) and my long time favorite was PS7. Now with a Quad, PS7 runs like crap so I'm using CS1 which I find to be great also. There are some features in CS2 that I like a lot, namely HDR editing, the Warp Deformer and Smart Objects. But to me CS2 does not seem as stable as PS7 or CS1 so I will more than likely use CS1 most of the time.
