I've been trying to find an answer to this problem for weeks, now, and I've only come across answers for brush lag.

I have Adobe Photoshop CS2 running on my Macbook Pro. It used to work PERFECTLY, no lag, no bugs, nothing. Then all of a sudden, about a month or so ago, it started lagging awfully. When I crop, resize, paste, color, paint, type, select a layer, switch a color, ANYTHING, it completely freezes for about ten seconds, then resumes.

It's driving me up the wall because I use Photoshop on a daily basis. I'm a student studying graphic design, so it's a BIT important that I have a nice, fast machine to run this program on. All of my others programs work fine and none of them are slow.

Here are as many spec's as I can figure to give you. Sorry, I'm not totally savvy with Mac hardware.

1st Gen. Macbook Pro, running Leopard 10.5.4.
120 GB HD
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHzm 667 MHz
Memory: 2 GB
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600M GT

I'm also using a Wacom tablet, but like I said, the lag isn't just with brushing or painting.

I've got Bootcamp as well with Windows XP, but Photoshop started acting up well after I did all that.

I'm wondering if maybe there's just a cache or something I need to clear out, but I'm completely dumb with Macs and don't really know where I would need to go to do that.

I've tried to clear a few things out of Photoshop, like actions, loaded brushes, etc. I've even tried uninstalling a few "heavy" programs, thinking maybe it was a memory issue, but the problem persists. I've also tried messing with the memory usage, scratch disks, image cache, all that, and it's not changed a thing.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

CS2 is PPC-only so it runs under Rosetta emulation on your MBP. Get CS3 or CS4 for native speeds.

I got Photoshop CS3 running right now, I removed CS2 from my HD.

I'm getting the same issue.

I've looked into defragmenting my hard-drive, but I keep seeing posts of people saying that Mac hard-drives do not need to be defragmented by design.

I'll give it a try once I find a good, FREE defrag application.

Sounds like I had the same problem as you a while back (though my MBP is an older version). The problem "went away by itself" for me after 2 months. I'm not sure what update(s) exactly it was that fixed it. However in the 2nd last post of my thread, someone suggested a fix that might work for you (i didn't actually do it myself since everything was working fine for me by the time that reply was made).

I wish I remember a post I read. It had a lot to do with your Wacom preferences. It's either adjusting the double click distance or tilt sensitivity. I can't remember what helped the user. You can try messing with those.
