I recently purchased a new 2011 Macbook Pro 15", 2.2ghz, 4GB ram. I'm running photoshop CS3, and I'm experiencing a very odd problem.

Specifically in my layers palette, and my layer styles dialog, photoshop lags for about 3-5 seconds when left-clicking things. For example, I can right click a layer, and go to 'blending options', and the layer styles dialog comes up almost immediately. However, when I double-click the right end of the layer (the way I typically bring up layer styles), it takes about 5 solid seconds for the dialog to appear. Similarly, if I use keyboard shortcuts to navigate through selecting different layers, the change in layer selection happens almost immediately. However, when I simply left-click a layer, it takes about 4-5 seconds for the layer to be selected. It almost acts as if I'm holding the mouse button down for those few seconds. This same delay also happens while selecting various layer styles within the layer styles dialog, as well as selecting a color from the color picker, which makes it almost impossible for me to pick a color, because if I've moved my mouse within those 4-5 seconds as it's lagging, the color will change to wherever my mouse is currently.

I'm not experiencing this problem anywhere else on my computer, nor anywhere else within Photoshop. Clicking all other tools and options works just fine. Photoshop is set to use 65% of my system memory, and it's set to use 2 cache levels. I've tried disabling 'tap clicking' on my trackpad, as well as use a standard usb mouse - nothing has fixed it. This problem is experienced no matter how large or small the document I am working on is.

Does anyone have any idea of what this could be??

One more odd thing to note, is that within the layer style dialog, if I right-click a layer style, such as 'drop shadow', it goes there immediately, however, if I left-click the same thing, it takes about 4 seconds to get there.

I am having this same problem with my new 2011 macbook. If I shortcut around the layers palette or right click on layers all fine but if I try and left click via mouse or trackpad there is the same 5 second delay. Also if I left click a layer and then during the delay mouse down to the osx dock it looks like I'm trying to to drag the layer to a new file.

Looking forward to finding out what this is.

Have you contacted Adobe? CS3 is fairly inefficient.

CS5 works fine for me on 2011 MBP.

I just posted this on the Adobe support forums. I'll reply back here if I find the answer.

Hey Matt,
I just reinstalled everything.
Did an erase and reinstall of OS X. (including rosetta and quicktime 7)
Installed the bundled software, Ran and installed a software update. Then installed CS3 creative suite. With everything. No custom install.

Photoshop CS3 Click lag problem is fixed.

No I just need to bring my libraries across and install all my apps again one by one and hopefully the problem won't arise again.

Painful but fixed.

Hope this helps.
Pete:)

Photoshop CS3 Click Lag on new MBP

Not sure what happened but the click lag problem has kicked back in on my CS3 photoshop. Matt, Did you end up finding a solution to this problem?

Thanks
P

Like you—I was experiencing this mysterious problem;
Like you—I was very happy when it went away;
Like you—I have sadly seen it return

I'm running Lion now, and CS5.5. Before, I was running CS5.1 and Snow Leopard. I never did figure out what the cause of this issue was, but it's terrible! It makes it hard to do any work at all. I will post here if I find a(nother) solution. In the meantime, here are threads on the Adobe forums, in case it helps.

Deselect the under the GPU Setting "Enable OpenGL Drawing", in Lion there seems to be issue with how OpenGL is interpreted and how it's offloaded to the GPU.

I suspect the issue being with Sandy Bridge there's in essence 2 GPUs one on the CPU and the other being discreet, I'm considering it's an issue where the workflow is being offloaded to thus why it's slow.

Otherwise I've heard a complete clean reinstall will do the trick.
