anything have a good trick/tip on how to create a realistic heat/steam effect? Lets say for a bowl of food or something, where it would distort the surround image. Thanx everybody

Fast and easy way of doing this is ( In a new layer, above your bowl or what have you) take your brush tool, set at the size you prefer, with very little hardness to the brush. make a few swirly lines, using white above the image. Then ad a gaussian blur to it, at a pretty high percentage. Fool around with it to get it right. There are some other great ways too. but this one is fast and simple
 
you kind of want a volumetric fog effect i think. google "volumetric fog photoshop" for a load of tutorials.
