It looks like this is Windows only too   Apple need to come out with their own image editing package pretty soon or the only option will be to overpriced Photoshop.

Strangely enough, Microsoft is coming out with "Acrilyc," which seems to be a low level image editing and creation app that would compete directly with Elements. I guess Adobe just didn't sell enough copies of the Mac version.

(As a side note: I don't believe that Photoshop is overpriced...or at least not *that* much) :)

For the average user i think it is... i mean its not Shake but still its pretty pricey for the average user who could get by using elements

Photoshop and Elements are in the middle of being converted from CodeWarrior to Xcode on the Mac side, so that they will be x86 compatible when the new Mac hardware arrives. With that conversion work going on, an interim Elements release would only slow down the more important project.

From dpreview.com:

"A spokesman for Adobe said that the program will be supported on the Mac in the 'near future'."

That makes sense - and Adobe has stated that they are fully committed to supporting the Mac platform. I don't think there's any reason to doubt that they will continue doing so.

As noted by others, Adobe states that a Mac version will be available shortly. And as for an Appleimage editting progam... what do you think iPhoto is?

And as for the price of the full Photoshop, yes it is expensive to get the initial license, but then upgrades are a reasonable price. (And some people skip a version before upgrading.)

Are you sure Elements is being converted, too? Most of the changes in Elements 4 are in the Organizer, and that's never been available for the Mac.

Sure looks like it's being discontinued to me.

As a general purpose, production-ready tool for publishing companies, Photoshop is not overpriced.

As an image editing tool for amateur photographers, Photoshop is definitely overpriced.

There is no doubt that the two products share a large amount of code. Many parts are identical, and if you dig into the apps you can see that they are even built the same way, with all the same MetroWerks stamps and weird vestigial OS 9 support etc. Both products would absolutely be affected by the conversion unless Adobe wanted to spend extra to maintain a separate branch for a low end product.

The separate Windows album features are nothing new. Adobe left those out of the Mac version of Elements 3 also because they were redundant with iPhoto.

I notice that Adobe are billing an extract tool for Elements 4. That's a big change that would affect the Mac version as well, the extract filter may be the one missing piece from Photoshop that consumers most often mention in their wish lists.

*shrug* Not according to Adobe.
