I think so too. They’ll go on and on how a12 will make photoshop run so fast. Hopefully we’ll also see a more ergonomic pencil with buttons on the side.

I’m looking forward to it too but it was just a few days ago that Adobe announced it and didn’t give a timeline other than 2019. We shall see.

Just wait for final cut X on iPad with external display support!

I too hope Apple announces a full version of Final Cut at this event. If Adobe will be releasing photoshop for the iPad in 2019, you just know they will probably announce an iPad version of Premiere sometime soon as well.

With new generation Apple pencil, on top of >$1K new Apple laptops. But the highlight software will be the full fledged photoshop for iPads.

or it won't be since Adobe already gave it the full court press. brief mention maybe but that's it. instead Apple will focus on hardware, how they stepped up their software, 1-2 other partners doing revamped apps etc .

i bet it won't happen. a way better version of iMovie that's more in line with the Mac version sure. maybe even something that goes a bit beyond iMovie into a Final Cut Elements sort of territory, but full on Final Cut i don't see as likely.

I dunno about that. Adobe is releasing a FULL version of photoshop to the iPad pros in 2019. That is a Monster program. I see zero reason why a Full version of Final Cut can’t be done as well. With the speed of the 12x and rumor of a USB-C connector for high speed video transfer. I think the writing is on the wall. Not saying Apple will announce it at this event...but you know with Photoshop coming to the iPad, Adobe will definitely announce a full version of Premiere for the iPad too I am sure. So why wouldn’t Apple the maker of the iPad Pro not release an iPad Pro version of their Pro video editing software. I think it’s inevitable.

since you're so sure that Adobe is going to do Premiere for the iPad. and the FULL version, why don't you tell us why they didn't announced it at Max. I mean they had no trouble announcing Photoshop with the vague 'in 2019' which could be Dec 31, 2019 so why fail to announce that they are also doing Premiere.

With adobe project rush available I think we’ll have to wait for a full version of premiere.
The biggest issue with video apps for sure is the amount of data that needs to be stored somehow. With photos it’s more doable, I guess that’s why photoshop comes first.

There's a lot that is going to have to happen in iOS and on the hardware side before that happens though I'm thinking.

I don't know how others produce videos but the thought of trying to bring together multiple media types and work with them from multiple source apps (whether it be Photoshop or After Effects etc. etc.) without true file system support, mouse support, insufficient RAM and on a single small display sounds like a freakin nightmare to me. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to do simple video projects with a little more oomph than say iMovie but what you're talking about in terms of full versions of Final Cut and Premiere sounds sweet yet unrealistic for any heavy use IMO. Might make for a "because it can" argument I suppose but sometimes just because one can doesn't mean one should.

Well, if you watched it, they actually announced Premiere Rush for the iPad. My point is, it’s happening. I have no doubt the next iPad pros going forward will be able to not only run photoshop, but Final Cut & Premiere. Again, I am not predicting when. Just that I truly believe it will happen. And sooner than people think.

Have you checked out Luma Fusion? Really great app for editing video! I just think that with adobe’s announcement of photoshop coming to the iPad, coupled with rumors about Apple replacing the lightning connector with USB-C for high speed video transfer & being able to run 4K HDR displays...I don’t think it’s a stretch to see it happening. I currently edit videos on the iPad with Luma & iMovie...and I love the tactile feel of touching the screen. I am fully immersed in the IOS ecosystem tho. Many of my artist friends are too. Sure, it’s not for everyone. But as an artist, photographer & videographer, I am Really excited about the rumors of these upcoming iPad pros and what they will be able to do.

This sorta reminds me of the days when dslrs started appearing. Many of my film camera using friends scoffed at the dslr ever coming close to film, let alone replacing it. Yet slowly advances were made...and now it has replaced film for most professional photogs.

Even tho we are comparing digital to digital here, I think the attitude toward the iPad pros is similar in a way. Some people scoff at them ever being able to do what a desktop can do. Slowly that has been proven wrong. And now Adobe is gonna release a full version of photoshop. So let’s see what happens with advances in video editing. Again, it won’t be a solution for everyone...but I think more and more will begin to embrace the iPad Pro for things they don’t now. Hey, as an iOS only artist I am very excited.

But as an artist, I am cool with whatever tools any other artist uses to achieve their creative vision. It’s all good.

Have heard of Luma Fusion, sounds great but I'll be honest - I have no desire to do video editing on my iPad. It just won't work for my workflow and I don't see it ever matching let alone edging out what I do on my laptop or workstation. Driving multiple displays at once, multiple SSD/hard drives with media on it and pulling images, edited audio and rendered clips from other applications into Premiere or FCP ? Forget about it . . not going to happen on iOS for a while, if ever.

I do zero shooting with my iPad so there's no media on it other than what I stream. If I have to import videos and stills from my DSLR onto the internal storage of my iPad just to edit video that's a waste of my time. Transfer speed to my SSD storage from camera memory cards via computer is a more efficient way to work. After that working straight off of the SSD in Premiere or FCP to do my editing is again much more efficient. Totally agree with you that there's potential for high speed transfer like this with USB-C on an iPad in the future, it just comes down to us waiting and seeing what Apple decides to do in the future. AFAIK there hasn't been a hint of that kind of support in iOS 12 that we've heard . . maybe someday.

No doubt it will work for some people - I just wonder about the desire to push to professional grade software that is going to run on mobile grade hardware. That's the thing that makes me go hmmmm when there's already some great mobile grade video editing software like iMovie or Luma Fusion out there . . . UNLESS . . coherence . . doing only certain tasks on the iPad and then moving over to desktop for more power. That's where I'm excited about Photoshop.

Man, I really don’t get all this iPad hate. Seriously. The point? The point is that more and more creatives(myself included) have switched to an iPad only setup. And many others at least use the iPad in their creative workflow. I think all the haters or non believers just haven’t even tried the iPad and as a result they are jaded against it. They cling to what they know, and refuse to even entertain the possibility that the iPad is anything but a toy. Maybe the iPad pros really can’t do what you want. That may be true. Fine. But I feel that many are still blinded by their own bias towards desktops or laptops...and are ignorant to what the iPad pros are truly capable of. More & more professionals are using the iPad Pro for their content creation. That is a fact. And it’s going to keep growing. Like it or not. Believe it or not. It’s happening.

I bet you also were one of those that said photoshop would never come to the iPad. Now it is.

I have edited film on a movieola. I have edited video on a computer. But Editing on the iPad with Luma & iMovie has been eye opening. I love it. The tactile feel of touch. Who needs a mouse? Not me. Although with usb-c coming to iPad pros...hooking up to 4K hdr displays will evolve working on iPads even further. I welcome it.

Whatever your set up is...I am sure it’s great and works for you. That’s awesome. I have nothing against any tool or method other artists use to create on. I am just saying the iPad works for me. And it’s only getting better and better. So again...I totally believe Final Cut & Premiere will come to the iPad pros too. It’s not a question of if, but when. Personally, I can’t wait. Peace.

Maybe. They did announce software for ingesting/basic video edits. I imagine the lack of official support for external local storage is a concern. As may be Premier's code base—they don't seem really optimized for the Mac ATM whereas FCPX (love or hate it's UI) is amazingly optimized and fast.

EDIT: I didn't read your later comments. It sounds like we're in agreement here.

I agree, it’s the lack of external storage that’s the biggest roadblock for serious video editing on iPad. With USBc i can see light at the end of the tunnel though. Maybe with a beefed up version of files in iOS 13..?

yes but with the usbC/Tb3 that will change

If they don't present a proper Macbook Air (if it still uses that name) then I personally would not care as I will never spend money on tablets.

Personally I'm more excited to see Procreate 4.2. And if I were Apple, I would probably do just as much to highlight the power of Procreate (what with it being an iOS exclusive, and ripe for acquisition, as much as I hope this doesn't happen).

That would be my guess, too. The files app is a little clunky but all the basic functionality is there. Overall, iOS seems to echo early Mac OS (i.e. versions 1-9) with files feeling a bit more like the original finder with a sidebar. You can do everything, it just requires you to be more deliberate.

So having external storage show up as a "source" (like DropBox, iCloud, etc.) seem obvious but I'm not sure how easy that does or doesn't make it to devs.

I don’t know that acquisition would be a bad thing. It all depends on whether Apple hires the original designers and lets them choose the direction they go in. If you go to the Procreate site folks are repeatedly asking them to support vector art, animation and even photo editing and the main reason they say they have no current plans for any of that is resources, mainly staff and money. An acquisition could provide that

Maybe they’ll release Final Cut for the iPad. Not Final Cut X, just Final Cut that is like a beefed up iMovie or skimmed down FCX that would work great for most YouTubers, vloggers, and home video prosumers doing short form video content. It could incorporate some advanced editing tools with more machine learning to streamline the process, and allow footage to be imported directly through the USB-C port.
