photoshop: muting colors on export?

Photoshop seems to be muting the colors off my images when I save them as jpgs. I can't figure out what's going on, so I'm hoping you guys could help me out.

I've attatched a screen shot of what's happening. The window on the left is the 'save for web' screen in photoshop and the window on the right is the same image as it appears in photoshop. The colors are clearly much less vibrant in the left image.

I haven't used photoshop on a mac for a few years. I switched back to windows a few years ago and am just starting to get back into the mac swing of things. I'm hoping its something simple that I'm missing. Just for trouble shooting information, this is the photoshop CS2 demo (just using it till I dig up my old mac photoshop disks) and this same thing happens to all images I try saving regardless of their file type or color profile. I haven't tried reinstalling the demo (not sure if that's even possible, or if it would help).

you are aware that "save for web" has a much smaller color gammut than a standard RGB file right?

its probably in your optimized as settings, you can adjust various paramaters to get a more true, or more optimized image.

make sure your color profiles and setup are correct.

if your working file has an sRGB assigned profile, the optimized JPEG will more closely match it.

Go to Image > Mode > Convert to Profile. Here you can select your intended output.

Yeah I know... it was just the easiest way to get both the exported version and the original version of the photo on the screen at the same time. The same thing happens when I just try saving the file as a jpg. Regardless, on my windows machine, the save for web preview is not muted, so that's not the issue. Thanks for the idea though...

Should have mentioned this earlier... I've working in sRGB, but something is definetly up with the color profile. This is only happening with pictures from my canon DSLR. Like I said, this doesn't happen on windows, and I'm really confused about what might be going on. I just tried some other images, and most of the images out of my SLR seem to be fine. I attatched a picture of my nice shiny car with the saturation boosted to illustrate. Both the car and the flower picture were shot in raw and processed using photoshop. I'm at a loss to explain what's happening. Why would the flower picture exhibit this behavior, but not the car picture?

I've played around a bit and now its just firefox doing this. The image looks fine when opened with preview but looks pale and desaturated in firefox. It looks fine in safari. Arghhh... I wish there was just a simple solution. Sorry about all those other posts.

Same problem: pale colors in photoshop in macbook

Hello, I am having exactly the same trouble, everuthing I explort to jpg format in my mac is turning up desaturated and pale. I am using a second generation macbook with OS X tiger sistem. I have tried using Photoshop CS3 and also Photoshop 7. both have the same problem... I had this before ocasionaly, now its all the time. Did you found a solution for this??
I know this posts are from 2 years ago but maybe you can help me

The web allows for a 256-color mode. the "dulling" usually happens with Vibrant Blues, Reds, and sometimes Greens.

What you may want to do is use the "eyedrop" tool. Click on the ORIGINAL red color that is appearing differently on the export. Once you've selected that color, check with your foreground color box. Click on it and look at the right hand corner where the a box says "New/Current". If you get a 3D box to the right of it, it means that color is not suited for the internet and will appear differently.

I'm not trying to dumb you down, you may or may not already know this. Just trying to offer a suggestion Goodluck!!

I think this problem has to do with some color settings that need re-setting. Even though you are using sRGB as your working space, your dslr or its download software is assigning another color profile to your pictures (most likely Adobe RGB)

In Photoshop, under Edit-->Color Settings in the middle of that dialog box is "Color Management Policies" make sure RGB is set to: CONVERT TO WORKING RGB. And make sure your working space is srgb by looking in the box right above this one.

Most people make the mistake of leaving "Preserve embedded Profiles" set, thus your image which looks great in Adobe RGB looks muted in sRGB.

I ran into this problem awhile back as well, here is how I fixed it.

When I know I am working on a project that is being designed for a web deliverable, I do the following:
1) Set color profile to sRGB
2) Go to View > Proof Setup > and make sure Windows RGB is selected.
3) When in the Save For Web window, select Standard Windows Color.

This will make sure that what you designed with the Windows RGB proof setup is accurately exported. Using this method has solved this problem for me every time.
