I am getting into an online database project with another developer. (I am doing the design, other developer doing the database). We are looking for a hosting company that can handle MySQL along with PHP scripting. PayPal will be involved because users will have to pay a subscription to access the database.

This online database has a total target audience of 5 or 6 thousand members (probably not all will be on at one time, but if so I need a company that could handle it). Have heard mixed messages from the vendors I've contacted. Some say dedicated, some say shared environment.

Any feedback that can be conveyed would be appreciated.

I'm hosted with BlueHost and they're pretty great. I don't think you'd need to have a dedicated host if you're going to have about 6000 users. BlueHost offers 400GB of bandwith per month, which I would imagine would be enough for a project like this (unless video is involved). If this is a text database, shared would be the way to go, but if a ton of multimedia is involved, dedicated might be your best bet.

The main thing is to avoid cheap shared hosts because they will put big limits on your CPU time.
