I currently have an iPhone 7+ that has 128 gigs of storage. My photos/videos take up 53 gigs of storage and 29 gigs are for apps, podcasts, etc. for a total of 82/128 gigs used.

If I buy an iPhone with smaller capacity, let's say 64 gigs, what happens to my existing photos when I transfer all of the settings over?

I have a 200 gig iCloud monthly storage that I share with my spouse.

Do you use iCloud Photos?

Yes - you will be prompted to turn on "optimise storage" which stores thumbnails of them and downloads from the cloud as and when you want to look at them.

No - you won't be able to restore the backup, it'll be too big.

My question in response. If I want to download from my iPhone (which only has the thumbnail) to my Mac do I get the full resolution picture or a thumbnail on photos for Mac?

I am finding it takes forever to load photos uploaded to the cloud on my iPhone when I view them.

Regarding the backup, that would be only specific to the iCloud Photo Library, correct? All of the apps and settings would transfer over?

Your question, I'm afraid raises more questions than answers.

If you use iCloud Photos it won't be a problem. If you don't... there's no iCloud Photo Library to speak of. That just means a huge camera roll, and unless something has changed recently, no - it'll tell you it's too big and that's that. None of the apps or settings would transfer over.
