Picked up a 2012 Mac Mini for $499

Huh. I never thought about buying an in-stock unit from the Apple Store. I guess they're not exactly gonna throw them away.
I could easily snag the mid-tier if they're really $699, but I'm gonna hold out a couple more days and see if any show up on the refurb store. They don't seem to last very long on the refurb site.

Stopped by the local Apple store while at the mall today. Confirmed that 2012 models are $499, $699, and $899 for the server model. Didn't seem like they had the 2014 models yet, though they did have the 5K iMac.
how is $500 a deal, the 2012 base mini should be $400-450 new right now

The minis at that price likely have only 4GB of RAM, so factor in a RAM update if you want to go there.
Yes, that is true only 4GB RAM in those. I'll be moving my SSD and 8GB RAM from my Late 2008 MBP, so that's not a factor for me.

Yes, $100 off from the old MSRP for the 2012 models if you can find them in your local Apple store.

Marginally lower bench scores with the 2014 base model, but keep in mind a bit better graphics with Intel HD 5000. For basic usage, I would say both are essentially the same in performance and you won't notice a difference. It's just the 2014 is not upgradeable.
They're most likely using that CPU because it's what they're using in all their base models of the MBA, 13" rMBP, and iMac.
I just saw one sold on eBay for 500 dollars! The source of 2012 Minis are drying up so if you want one then my worthless recommendation is to grab one. One factor which the 2012 Mini will always win is the ability to upgrade RAM to 16GB. You're stuck with your soldered memory choice out of the gate on the 2014 model.
Cripled model. The base model is now 100$ more: it is 699$.
If you take the previous base model (i5 2.5-3.1 TB ghz), and increase the specs slightly (i5 2.6-3.1TB ghz) to reflect any existance of Moore's law, you would have the current second model, and even then the new second model is crippled compared to the older base.
For 500 you get a Surface Pro 1 with a similar CPU as the Mini yet with 128GB SSD, an IPS HD screen and a Wacom digitizer...... It even runs National Park OS-es.
Don't forget Best Buy. I picked up a Mid 2012 Mac Mini the other day for $639. It was an "open box" return. It was actually a never opened in box return the day of the keynote. Looks like they wanted one of the new ones. Felt pretty good about that. The iPhone best buy app tends to be easier to find the "open box / clearance " items than using the main website.

Hmm. I was at my local Apple store today. Maybe they gave me the wrong price? I was quoted $999 for the 2012 i7 2.8 quad , server , 1TB fusion drive.

Exactly! I just ordered a 2012 2.6 from B&H. Oddly enough an order for a 2012 2.6 with 8GB RAM (the only 2.6 left at the time) was cancelled yesterday. Now today the basic, and preferable, 2.6 is back in stock.
Now my 960GB M500 that was in my dearly departed Mac Pro has a place to go and live out the rest of its days. I won't order an OWC Data Doubler until I see where they've mounted the hard drive. Hopefully it is in the upper bay so I can slip the SSD into the lower bay with a minimum of fuss. One can hope.
Interesting. He also told me for 2012 minis , that they didn't have anything but the stock models. Nothing custom. Don't really need a server. I may opt for the $699 model and upgrade ram and an SSD or fusion drive.
