Picked up a new air, my first mac ever!

just bought a refurb machine about 3 days ago and got a pretty awsome deal
$800, never used with 46 weeks of warrenty remaining!

originally i was going to get a macbook unibody, but after i found this deal i couldnt resist..even though iv heard many bad things regarding the rev A air's.

Im comming from a dell xps m1300 t9300 2.5ghz 4gb ram 13" led 8400m 500gb and 6 + 9 cell battery. The machine is setup to dual boot with OSX and Windows 7. About 6 months ago i would of never even considered a macbook, but as time went on i started using windows less and less until i caved lol.

I have to say after using the air for about 2 days im fairly impressed. its uber thin, light, easy to transport, loving the big trackpad, multitouch, the quality of the machine and the screen, while it is a bit slow compared to the t9300 osx runs just fine and so does windows 7 on bootcamp. I gotta say, im officially converted! Im not sure if ill keep the air or sell it for a unibody as iv already had it overheat on me once. one thing i am wondering though is if i have too many problems with it will the apple store replace it with a new rev A if my problems persist after they keep repairing it?

also what you guys recommend in the ways of cases/protection?

Congrats and welcome to Mac OS X. Try installing Coolbook to undervolt your CPU to run cooler and extend battery charge life. Also SMCFanControl to gain control over your cooling fan speed. Do a search here to see what people have successfully set on their MBAs.

As far as protection, I installed Elago skins on the wristrest, trackpad and outer body. I use an Incipio Orion slipcase to carry it around the house and an STM Small Alley bag for travel.

All I can say is once I made the switch (about a year ago) I was hooked. My first Mac was the 2.4ghz white macbook. I was very impressed with it's performance and ease of use. OSX after a few days was so much more enjoyable to deal with vs windows xp/vista. I upgraded a few months back to the Rev B MBA with the SSD drive and it is faster than the macbook and it ended up as my primary computer. I sold the Macbook and have been happy ever since.

My personal opinion for around $800 to $1000 would be to find a Unibody Macbook. It will outperform the Rev A and you will avoid the overheating/core shut down issues. I love my Rev B but if looking for a 2nd laptop for the wife think I would go back to a Unibody MB over a Rev A, even at that price. Just to many issues from forums I've read.

The Air as a first Mac is quite different than usual... Most new users get an iMac or MacBook or maybe a Mini. You'll discover that the Air is an odd beast. It has some great good points, and a few things that will mystify you. But know that what it was designed to do it does exceptionally well.

My Rev A MBA is my first Mac as well. I can't believe I didn't switch sooner. Sure the Rev A has had some issues but once I tuned Coolbook properly it's been rock solid. Coming from a PC background I am used to daily reboots to clear up mysterious problems. The MBA? I just put it to sleep and wake it when I'm ready to use it. Even if the Rev A MBA isn't Apple's finest piece of hardware OSX makes it light years better than a PC. <--- My opinion of course.

They would probably replace it with a new Rev B, since they don't have anymore Rev A stock at the Apple Stores. I just returned my Rev A for a full refund, despite their offer to get me the Rev B or their top of the line Unibody MBP...
