I've needed some external storage for my new Quad G5 and did a little looking around the net for options. What really got me interested in the MiniG is that the power source is outside the enclosure (so that means that the heat stays outside the enclosure as well) - but when I got the thing today I was amazed at how small it actually was :D And since the power source is outside, it means the fans don't come on often, and that means its a lot more quiet. Very cool and I'm really happy with this. I know a few people who have the LaCie disks and they've all complained how noisy the things are.

Specs: dual 500 Gig drives (1 Terabyte) mounted separately - no RAID and connected via FW800.

And I didn't get it because it looks like a MiniG5, that's just a nice bonus. I was also pleasantly surprised to see its packaging - they've take a more than the MiniG's looks from the G5 - and I was so surprised that I took some pics :D I've also included one of my current setup - enjoy!

Last one is the whole setup with the other computers on the left (the Sawtooth is probably going to be sold soon :D)

I don't know if I would use the word "cute" - can 1 Terabyte be cute? They also have a 4 drive and 1 drive enclosure - I might get another single drive eventually to have as a travel drive. Its still in its evaluation period - but I'm happy so far.

Is it just me or does it remind you of Mini Me? Size, colour, etc.?

So now the fans have turned on and there is a little hum - but its not bad and a far cry from what my old dual G4 was like.

Sorry to say it, but I personally think that thing looks awful. I have seen other external hard drives/raid setups that have the same sweet mesh and aluminum of the G5 tower, but don't have the shape of the tower. I'm sure it works nicely though.

My biggest concern was the noise, not the form factor. There is a fan blowing, but its not annoying.

And I'm not really looking at it at all - its under the desk on top of the quad :D

Nice looking but pricey. My money is going to a Maxtor onetouch III. 1TB and FW800 for $770.

I bought a maxtor one touch and didn't like it at all, it eventually died on me as well.

Do you have any reviews on that model? I'd be curious to read them?

Was I correct to assume that they also offer just the enclosure for $129?
Anyway, that looks great. But what interested me more is that you actually still use a drafting machine!!!! Jesus I thought I was the only one who still had one!

Hahaha - I love the drafting table, but it only gets used once in a while. There's something to be said for the tactile senses in designing, even if it is conceptual sketching.

I got the thing from my old job about 5 years ago when they were getting rid of it - I jump at the chance to take it home, even though at the time I had absolutely no place to put it.

They do offer the enclosure by itself, but the price depends on wether you get the 1,2 or 4 bay size.
