Pics of what heat from MBP did to my desk, plus a wierd new fan noise.

Earlier today, I noticed that the fan on the right side of my MBP CD seemed to be making an odd noise. I can't quite explain it more than saying it doesn't sound "smooth" like the other fan. It becomes much more pronounced as the fans rev up, I did a hardware test to see if that would make any difference.

A few min. ago though, I picked it up from my desk and noticed that there was a major crack in the wood below my MBP, the crack extends all the way through the top of my desk. Mind you, it's possible that it's the line where two pieces of wood were put together, but nevertheless, it was never like this before. I'm certain it wasn't this way until I came home for Christmas break.

You can see where the crack starts on the left between my speaker jack and the USB cord for my iPod.

The heat has never really bothered me before since I almost always have my MBP on a desk. The fan noise on the other-hand does concern me, any idea as to what this could be.

By the way, I've sent it in twice before with the infamous "whine" and they've replaced the logic board twice, they've replaced the inverter, and I believe they replaced the video card once too.

The whine is still present although much less than it was before (they installed the updated logic board) and I've taken care of it completely with ShhMBP.

What kind of fan noise does it make? My close friend with a MBP has an odd noise coming from his. He says that the right fan sounds like its hitting the delete key (well something in that area) and making a constant clicking noise. He brought it into a Genius Bar and they had no idea except that when he uses it on his lap he might be putting uneven pressure on the casing and pushing the right fan into the obstruction of something near it...Doesn't really make sense to me. Well it makes sense, but I've never heard of this problem anywhere else. But you say you have a whine noise and not clicking, so basically this post is irrelevant.

Would heat really do that to a desk? That seems a little extreme coming from just a laptop. I'm not saying your wrong, its just, well, crazy...

it's winter and the lack of humidity is drying out the desk. pine (the wood your desk is mad of) is especially prone to splitting when it dries out. while your mb MAY have exacerbated the problem, it is not the culprit. splitting, checking, warping are normal things that happen to wood.

if the crack bothers you, buy a new desk OR cover the desk in laminate.

Not sure about the sounds but i don't think you MacBook Pro is the desk cracker.

I will say, though, that you should send in the computer ASAP. if the fan is making noise, it's gonna need replacing.

That's what I'm worried about. The thing is, I wonder if I'm not just hearing things, the sound is not even audible normally, only when the fans rev up. The only way you'd hear it otherwise is if you put your ear right over the keyboard and listen carefully.

The other problem is that I can't go without my MBP for the time that it would take, I go back to school in a week and the turnaround time that I was quoted from AppleCare was 2 weeks. The nearest Apple Store is either St. Louis or Nashville, so that option isn't really feasible either. There are two places near here with Apple Certified Technicians. My question is, if I took my MBP to them, would whatever they do be covered by my AppleCare Warranty?
