Picture editing software

I have an iMac & have always used iPhoto for all of my photo needs. I am wanting to have more ability in editing (I'm a novice). One big thing I want is the ability to scan a picture & then produce a page of wallets or 5x7's etc. This is a big need with our children constantly having their pictures taken @ school & I would like to be able to reproduce them in different sizes as I want at home. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Ease of functionality is important as well.

idk how the quality of the image will be when you scan them. What you are asking is to edit a photo that's already been flatten. It would be equivalent to scanning a copy paper over and over. What I suggest to parents is to invest in a nice camera. Take the photo themselves. Upload to their computer and print with a decent printer like a Canon printer.

On your mac you can use Image Capture to scan and Preview to make any adjustments.

While it is true that a printed image to be scanned is rather limited in colour and light to dark range, one can produce decent scans that come close to the original. It is a matter of knowing how to scan and also how to 'resize' for printing.

Perhaps you might want to look at Pixelmator, GIMP (free but complicated), and Lightroom by Adobe. Read up on each to learn how to resize and print and know how to get the most out of your printer.

I work doing photo restoration that all starts with scanning original photos. While my work might be to bring back "life" to the image, I have dabbled with scanning newer photos that are otherwise offering acceptable sharpness and colour and produce similar results via scan and print (sometimes I have improved images via colour balance change, sharpening and more). Let's remember that a printer can't fully cover the full range of a high quality digital file made from a good digital camera so in a sense a well done scan of a good print overlaps what a printer can do easily.

iPhoto 06 had an option to do N-up. if you chose 2, you would get two 5 X 7's on one page. If you chose 9, you would get the equivalent of wallet photos. The N-up option is no longer available and I haven't found anything to replace it. Choosing customize in the current version of iPhoto will give you the option of printing two 5 x 7's on a page.
