I made a bunch of pictures with a digital camera and imported them to iPhoto. The pictures appear normal size in Preview but when I uploaded them to my website it shows the pictures as huge, as in more than a whole screen. Do you know what I should do so that people I link to my site don't see a life size head of me?

If you don't mind the disk storage necessary, you can also leave the full-sized images intact, as I do. I generate relatively large thumbnails, say up to 240x240, using iPhoto's export feature, and I leave the originals intact. Visitors to my web site admire the big thumbnails, and they can click on any thumbnail to get the huge version, which they can download and use for printing. In other words, the image meant for online viewing is the thumbnail, and the full-resolution images are on-demand only.
Double-click each picture and and go File > Export, at which time you can resize your picture. Digital photos are already 72 dpi (dots (or pixels) per inch). They only differ in the total number of pixels in the photo.
I believe a 2 megapixel camera at full resolution will give you something like 1600 x 1200 @ 72 dpi. 1600 x 1200 = 1,920,000 pixels, or roughly 2 megapixels. Your computer will render that image at full size, giving you your huge head.
All you have to do is reduce the image down to a more reasonable size for the Internet. To reduce an image to roughly 3"x5" (or 216x360), enter 216 for the small side and the other side will fall in naturally around 360 pixels, or around 5".

For 72dpi display, just multiply inches by 72. So use 288x432, which creates an image that is about 121K before compression.
For pix, exporting at 600x400 or 800x600 should be more than enough - and with medium .jpg compression you should get them under 100k. You can have iPhoto do it all for you - make a new Album, put all the images you want to post in there and select the webpage option under export.

Thanks guys but I still can't get it, I need the pictures to be exactly 4"x"6". So I tried entering 288x432 but I can't because at the bottom it says "Preserving 4:3 ratio" and one of the numbers changes.
Can anyone tell me how to change it so it will allow 288x432? It'd be very strange that a photo program can't resize images to standard photo size.
If your camera shoots at a 4:3 aspect ratio, you will not only need to resize the picture, you will need to crop some of the picture. That is if you want it to look aproximatly 4" x 6" on the screen. Note, not all screens have the same DPI. it might be good to downsize the image to 324x432 pixels which would be 4.5" by 6" at 72 DPI.
In case you haven't cropped to a particular proportion before...
In iPhoto, on the Edit screen, select 4x6 (Postcard) or 4x6 (Portrait) from the Constrain drop-down box at the bottom left of the screen. Then use the cursor to drag a rectangle the size you want. You can then use the cursor to move the rectangle. Then click the Crop button. Your photo will be in 4x6 or 6x4 proportions. When you export it, you should get exactly the pixel dimensions you want.
