pictures in messages app missing?

in the messages app on yosemite a new picture shows in full after a while the picture in the message box turns to the name of the file IMG_000

and i double click the name to open the picture in full, it doesn't work.
i have to click on the "i" icon to bring up a popup with a list of all the pictures

how do i make it so the photos in messages stay visible and not the name IMG_444 or whatever

Supposedly everything gets erased when a new OS update is installed. I lost my pics also.

Im trying to find out how to restore the Time Machine backup of my iMessages so I can retrieve my pics.
