OS X Pinball arcade performance

I was looking for some help on the mac version of Pinball arcade (steam).

I recently jumped back over to mac after having a pc laptop and am having some issues with playing one of my favorite relatively simple games on steam.

My pc laptop was an AMD A10-4600m 2.3GHz quad core (well AMDs version anyway) with Radeon 7660G integrated graphics. It was a modest laptop but played the simple games (and even some of the more demanding ones like Bioshock Infinite) I enjoy such as this one no problem, very well in fact.

I would think this machine with a quad core i7 (which crushes my old cpu) and Iris Pro graphics (quite a bit faster than the 7660G according to notebookcheck) should be able to handle it? Is this just another case of Mac gaming not being as well optimized as PCs or is there a setting I'm missing?

As you've not described your "issues" with The Pinball Arcade Mac, I'm going to make a guess that you're running OS X Yosemite, and you are finding that the gameplay physics have slowed periodically and inconsistently. Changing any of the settings in the game does not help much, nor does quitting other apps.

If so, try this trick which has worked wonders for me and eliminated the constant frustration I'd been experiencing since upgrading to Yosemite.

Quit the Pinball Arcade. In the System Preferences-> Displays pane, choose a Scaled resolution that's different from your default (or regular) one. Once the monitor screen has refreshed, change the resolution back to the setting you normally have (or choose Default for display). Then launch the Pinball Arcade and see how it plays.

This trick has been discussed on the pinballarcadefans.com forum. Note that the resolution switch has to be repeated after a restart of your Mac. Hopefully the developers will finally sort out an app fix now they've been told how we fans have found a workaround.
