Guys - similar to Windows, can one use a hostname for functions like ping in terminal or vnc://hostname. I can't get that to work on my LAN. In fact, I can't even ping my own host. Thanks

etaleb@etaleb-mac ~ % ping etaleb-mac

ping: cannot resolve etaleb-mac: Unknown host

What does it say is the hostname under:

System Settings -> General -> Sharing -> Local Hostname

something totally different and I used it and it works. I guess I can use other hostnames to establish vnc connections, etc too. Right?
Should I also enable a dynamic global hostname and give it a shorter name and enable Bonjour? I do have about 10 different types of apple devices on the network and wondering if it'll help

Thanks
