Somewhere along the way I completely missed any info warning about upgrade issues with Aperture
I was unaware of the forward 'incompatibility' of Aperture
with osx yosemite .
Any ideas how to backtrack ......

Can I somehow get back to an OSX that will still allow me to use Aperture?

I love Aperture and don't want anything else LOL

Yosemite supported Aperture. Note however that Apple stopped supporting and updating both Aperture and iPhoto back in June 2014. so it would be in your best interest to look at alternatives.

Aperture and Yosemite are fine, a few niggles in El Capitan and Sierra but for the most part it still works well.

Just restore from your backup.

And were you running the last version of Aperture? or some less than 3.6?

I have upgraded my system from yosemite all the way to sierra without any major problems.

I migrated all of my files to adobe but keep aperture running with an old library.

I use it in Sierra with almost no issues.
Me too. Works without a single problem even with Sierra Beta 10.12.4

As far as I can know, there is no "forward incompatibility" with Aperture so far. I don't understand the OP's problem.

I use it with Sierra 10.12.4 - constantly - but I would be far from saying it is without a single problem: I have a list of them: switching back and forth to full screen the full screen mode will turn all black (blank), have to quit and restart Aperture to get it back, or the picture with appear in full screen, but menus won't display if you move the cursor to the top (again have to quit/restart). From time to time it will crash. Most annoying, I've lost the ability to share photos from Aperture to Facebook: I get a: "Facebook didn't recognize the login information you entered for account (my user name)" and when I enter Email/Password: "An unknown error occurred" (mind you it isn't a specific version macOS that did it in - I had moved my main Aperture library to an external SSD when I lost Facebook - so you need some combination of circumstances to hit that bug)

All this said, no matter how many times I've tried to force myself to use Lightroom, I still crawl back to Aperture...
