The screen of my MacBook Pro 2018 with touchbar stopped working out of the blue 45 days after my warranty expired.
Depending on the angle you open the laptop it will function normally. There’s is no “right angle” or “right position” for it to work. Sometimes it will work fine in 15º, 30º or maybe even 90º, and other times you won’t even find the right angle. Took it to Apple Store, they said it could be the cable and they could try replacing it to see if it would work. I was ok knowing I would have to pay $70 for the new cable + $110 for labour, but I refused to let them replace the screen if the cable wouldn’t work because it costs more than $700. Couple days ago, I got a call from Apple saying my MacBook was available at the store but they couldn’t fix the issue. Me, as disappointed I was, call Apple support and they explained they could try doing something, but I would have to have my laptop on hands and told be I should call them when I reached Apple Store for the pick-up. So I did what they told me to and at the end, the support assistant on the phone told me there was nothing they could do, I would have to pay the full amount.
I thought it could be related to the MacBooks of 2016 and 2017 that had the flexgate issue, but I read Apple fixed it with longer cables. The symptoms are very similar, although I’ve never experienced the “stage lights” effect.
I’d like to know if anyone else is being affected with the same issue, because I do think it’s a manufacture problem and we need to make Apple aware of that. But for now they are refusing to acknowledge the issue.
