Pioneer DVR-112D SuperDrive?

I'm currently in the process of sending back the Pioneer DVR-109AB to OtherWorldComputing to upgrade to the brand new DVR-112D. Has anyone tried this drive yet in a Mac Pro? I had a strange issue with the DVR-109AB and it would suck to find out if the 112D has the same problem.

Here's the problem I've been having with the 109AB. If the drive went to sleep after disc inactivity, then ejecting the disc would be weird. Lemme explain. After the drive is asleep (or spun down) I would try to eject the disc and here's what would happen: The cursor would get very jumpy or sluggish feeling as it skips around the screen when I move the mouse for about 10 seconds, then I'd hear the drive spin back up and the disc icon would unmount from the desktop (as if it's ejecting) but, nothing happens. Then, the disc would remount on the desktop as if I just put the disc in. Then, once all of that is back to normal, I can go ahead and eject it. Basically, I can only eject normally if the disc is still spinning.

So, I'm sending it back. Now, for the original topic. Has anyone used this drive yet? Any problems with it?

My 109 did that so i replaced it with a 110. Now the 110 does it even worse than the 109 did. It pisses me off big time because it can take nearly 20 seconds to get a disc out. I think Pioneer drives are crap. Im going to sick with it for the time being then just get a MacPro. Hopefully it wont repeat the problem. Im going to get Apple care this time too.

What kind of computer do you have? I've read that the Mac Pros are shipping with DVR-111D drives. Also, the 109AB does the same thing in a Mac Pro so a Mac Pro may not relieve your problem.

You have the 111D right? Have you tried letting a disc spin down in it and then ejecting it after? What does it do? Does it eject right away or does it hang your computer up for a while and then do nothing.

I recently installed the Pioneer 112D on a Mac Pro and can confirm that it works. I purchased it to replace the disappointingly *loud* stock Sony/NEC drive. Big improvement.

Be aware you need to remove the bezel from the disc tray before installing, otherwise it will jam with the Mac Pro's optical drive covers. To do this, you can pop open the tray with a paper clip inserted into the emergency eject on the front of the drive. Then, find the tabs holding the tray bezel in place and push down on them with a small screwdriver, etc.

I recently replaced the bottom Sony/NEC drive that came with my Mac Pro with a Pioneer DVR-112D purchased from OWC. Here are my experiences:

1) Like the 109AB, it usually takes 2 successive ejects to remove a spun-down disk in the drive. The first eject effectively acting as an unmount-then-remount cycle.

2) Unlike what you've reported with the 109AB, there have never been any mouse cursor jitters while the 112D goes through the unmount-remount-eject sequence.

3) Ripping and Burning time is much improved over the (Riplock enabled?) Sony.

4) Noise is generally muffled compared to the Sony drive, but it is noisy as any other drive when spinning at maximum RPM.

My advice is to go ahead and get it, especially as OWC offers DragonBurn bundled with the drive (I find DragonBurn handles some tasks better than Toast8). The whole eject-weirdness thing is really just a minor annoyance that a future firmware update (official or otherwise) may sort out.

I bought and intalled my Pioneer DVR-112D (beige) on my eMac and seems I can't write on speed higher than 2x for DVD's, and 10x for CD's.

What should I do?

Anyone faced such problems?

Can't tell you how you'd cure it on a mac but on a pc burning at 2* would indicate the drive is running in PIO mode rather than DMA.

Only thing I can think of is. Are you using an 80 way ide cable and is it set right for the drive if it's a 3 way cable (middle connector for a slave, end one for a master). Other than that not a clue unfortunatly as I use my pioneer in a fiewire casing for burning on my mac.

When I inserted a Movie DVD on my superdrive (Pioneer DVR-112D Beige) on my eMAC asked for area code and I only can change the area code 5 times.

Does anyone knows hows to set as multi-regional?

What's the brand and the speed of the media you're using? Are you trying to burn Dual-Layer DVD's? Many of these (e.g. Memorex) are only rated for 2X burning. If so, drop a higher speed disk into the tray and see what happens. The Verbatim DVD DL media I got from newegg burn at 8X.

I bought some Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4x discs and they would not play in any of the DVD players I have in the house. I bought Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x-10x (my burner burns them at 10x) and they work in every DVD player in my house. I didn't think that the same media by 2 different brands would be any different... I just figured my DVD players weren't compatible with DVD+R DL... I was wrong I guess. I'm buying only Verbatim from now on.
