When I go to Iconfactory; there are icon sets and some are denoted as having Pixadex iContainers and others have CandyBar iContainers.

If I like two different icon sets and one shows the Pixadex icon and the other shows CandyBar, would I need to purchase both Pixadex and CandyBar?

I'm not too sure about the differences between Pixadex and CandyBar. And I have read the FAQs on both but the whole icontainer thing throws me for a loop. Some insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Basically, think of Pixadex as being like iPhoto for icons – it allows you to catalogue your icon collection, arrange them into groups, that sort of thing. But it doesn't allow you to change icons en masse, you can only change one at a time. CandyBar, on the other hand, allows you to change all your system's icons in one go – even those you can't normally touch, like Trash and the Finder.

CandyBar icon sets contain all the icons needed for a complete system overhaul, which is not necessarily the case with Pixadex sets. Pixadex can import CandyBar sets, though.

Hope that helps make things a little clearer. :)

Thanks for the speedy response...

so if I were to purchase CandyBar (sounds more useful to me because I wouldn't have to bother w/ the whole one-by-one icon changing), then could I still use some of those Pixadex icons?

The two sets I'm refering to are iSystem (which has the label of Candybar iContainer) and iSystem Extras (which has the Pixadex iContainer).

Candybar can apply Pixadex collections, if that is your question.

Personally, I don't get into customizations anymore because it takes up to much time and you never get your system... just right.

Awesome, thank you that answers my question perfectly!

Haha, I'll bet it does end up taking loads of time, but it's fun and I've attempted doing the random odd manual change of icons especially since prior to this I never noticed an icon set that I liked. But I like this one-- I still don't know if I'm willing to shell out the money, but I'm feeling a strong magnetic pull to customize my iMac. :p

I know the thread has kind of ended, but I thought CandyBar can only open CandyBar iContainers, but Pixadex can open both. The reason I say this is because the CandyBar iContainers contain the info of what each icon is for, whereas the Pixadex ones don't, I think.

Hi devilot76,
I use both but Pixadex can hold up to 250 icons and if you want to "hold" more then you many need to pay. I tried both and that was the only limit I found and I got it from VersionTracker.
Boy can it take up some time but it is your Mac ;) so why not really make it yours :p Enjoy, Dodger

Hmm.

So after 20rogersc's post I'm back to square one as far as my state of confusion...

I mean, currently, w/out either CandyBar or Pixadex I can download and open those Pixadex icons. Maybe, Artful Dodger, could you elaborate a bit more? I really can't justify spending that much money to get both apps.

"Pixadex can import and handle both types of iContainers easily. CandyBar can only use the iContainers associated with itself."

Reads to me like Pixadex can open both types, while CandyBar can only open its own type (ie. CandyBar iContainers).

Edit: You can get them both in one package for $25 on Amazon.

dubbz, thank you so much! I didn't realize that I could buy it in such an all-inclusive package. I'm going to start looking at student discounted sites. Thanks again!

Sure, All I did was go to versiontracker, well here ya go:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16010

Got the download, next I went to iconfactory.com, then did the download from here: http://www.iconfactory.com/px_home.asp
If the download doesn't work go through versiontracker again for Pixadex. The only thing with the "trial" of Pixadex is it will only store up to 250 icons from any source. CandyBar would like you to pay after you try it out, it's $12.95 for the full version download.
As you can see it looks like (as someone said before) iPhoto for your icons and is very nice to use :) Hope this helps :)

Hm, I guess I should have been clearer...

I was wondering how to use those Pixadex icons w/ CandyBar (since I can download some of those right now w/out either app) but it really doesn't matter because thanks to dubbz[/ib] I've purchased CandyBar 2, the package that has CandyBar and Pixadex. :D Just gotta wait till I get it, just you wait, I bet I'll get lost somehow.

Thanks to all who replied!

Okay now I get it ;) Just drag and drop the icons from Pixadex or the CandyBar area into the left side where the icons have placement names. Next for whatever area you choose you may have to "relaunch" say..your Dock or the Finder. I'll try to post a pic in the next 15 mins.

Just check the delete box, upper right on candybar, it was a drag and drop. Also if you look at the CandyBar top you can choose diff. areas.
Now if I remember when you download something for candybar it may go into a folder on your desktop or where you place it. I know that on my iBook I only used CandyBar and it worked out just fine. I hope I didn't make this crazy complicated  If so give me a few red faces ;)

Muchos gracias

I can't answer whether or not I totally 'get it' since I don't have either apps yet... but once I get it, if I get lost, I will most definitely come back to this thread and your advice. Thanks a bunch! :D

hhmmm so I was right after all!! Sorry about the confusion devilot76, but I'm glad that we've [kind of] sorted it out. Anyway, as to sum up all that I know, iCandy will only use iContainers, but Pixadex both. If you save that iContainer to Pixadex, so can then either drag and drop like menoitned above, or ctrl-click on the collection and 'send to CandyBar' I think.

If you get the option to download Pixadex or CandyBar iConatiners, go with CandyBar, as these contain the information of which icon they are for, wheras Pixadex ones just contain the icons.

Hope this helps

Yup, it took me about two hours to figure that out and about 1/2 hr of that was until I saw the part of what I wanted changed in CandyBar on the top part: Apps., Vol., Extra Apps...I was ready to pull my hair out, I knew I changed it but why won't it change   then the coffee kicked in :D

Glad to know it has a happy ending. As for changing icons, I thought it was meant to be easy :D
