Today Pixelmator started their public beta of their Photo app for IOS. It looks like the app does raw editing and some effects. I would guess it will be Q1 2019 before it is released.

It might be a good alternative to Lr CC on an iPad.

This is a good app but don’t expect to see it as a follow up to the original Pixelmator. It is disappointingly missing a lot of the features from that app. The interface and basics are certainly improved on this new app though.

Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro are much more like Affinity Photo and Photoshop. This is much targeted towards Raw Power and Lightroom. Not much overlap with Pixelmator or Pixelmator Pro.....but they should tie them in for value-added benefits.

Why is it that its almost 2019 and these apps advertise things like 'crop' as a feature? Crop should never be advertised as its such a basic tool that each photo editing software should have it by default. Or are these apps something like photos from Apple? ie. crippled down Aperture that is used for super light editing and nothing else?
I really don't understand what we are looking at here? An app for my grandma to use for light touches or full on app that I can use to edit my photos and take them super far?

So confusing

You have to try them and decide for yourself.

Thank goodness I only want basic editing on iPad for when I have to immediately share an image. All my images go back to the iMac where there are more resources (CPU, GPU, memory, screen size, printer, DAM/library.....etc) to edit images.

Well, with the power of these new iPads I feel that that is no longer a massive issue.
Not sure how the workflow implements here but why would I want to do a transfer to my iPad to do basic stuff and then another transfer to my computer, when I can skip the iPad and go straight to computer?

ie. I love the idea of using iPad for editing but that is kinda what I want as end station. (hence why I'm going to test affinity for ipad). If I edit on Mac I wanna start and finish on Mac but if I edit on iPad I wanna start and finish on iPad. Why introducing another step inbetween? Especially when iPad still doesn't have proper file system in place that would make it easier? Am I missing something?

If you are serious about editing on the iPad then you absolutely need Affinity Photo imho. Great app. Nothing to stop you using that for and pixel editing then exporting and using something like Pixelmator Photo to fine tune colours etc. although you can certainly do it all in Affinity.
As for advertising something like crop, I would prefer they confirm it is there rather than buy it and discover it isn’t. Pixelmator Photo for example doesn’t have a vignette feature or any way to replicate one. Darkroom 4 doesn’t have a repair tool. These are tools I find are must haves so best to know up front.

In Affinity Photo if you bring in a raw image to the Raw module and edit it, then send it to the Photo module for effects...you can't take it back to Raw and have exactly the same level of editing controls as you did the first time in Raw module. That does not work for me.

Without brushes or selective edits I’m finding pixel quite limiting. The layout of the app and tools seem to work well, I can only see basic edits being done here. Good results though, for what it does.

Yeah, I've found Pixel.... quite limiting also.
gonna test Affinity and see but yeah, would rather prefer Apple revived Aperture and develop it further. :)

As much as I dislike Adobe’s subscription model, I already know how Lightroom works, I can use it on both a computer and a tablet and it does a good job. I just suck it up and pay every month. Easier than spending time trying to find the elusive replacement and, even if I can find one, dealing with yet another learning curve.

Recently, I took a good look at Capture One, but abandoned the idea when I discovered that there isn’t a tablet app for editing. There is no way that I’m going to use one photo editing app on my computer and a different photo editing app on my iPad.

I understand but for me, I would not be on subscription model. Ever! Thats my principle so I would rather invest the time and learn something I know is good then give adobe the money they bloody ask for.

I’m using adobe and enjoy their system, unfortunately the iPad apps still fall down, CC is okay to sync portfolios. Editing is still quite basic. Hopefully photoshop release on iPad will change things.

I only just sent the aperture horse to pasture, I was still flogging it.
Have just spent time transferring 80k photos to adobe from aperture. Hated when they gave up on that.
