Can i use PKG Backup without syncing with Google? When i sync my contacts with google it ****s up because of all the different e-mail adresses.. I can't seem to only sync this PKG Backup contact anyway, and i don't really know how to solve that **** up issue - any ideas?

Can i just copy the PKG.list file via SSH and thus have the backup as that file on my computer instead of on Google?

PkgBackup stores the info on a contact file. You can sync your contacts thru iTunes with AddressBook (Mac) or Contacts and others also (Win/PC).
 
Well, when plugging in the iPhone on my computer:

Going to the Info tab, there's a section called Contacts.
In that section i can check the option to Sync my contacts, and if i check it i get three options of which i want to sync with:

- Google contacts
- Windows adresses
- Yahoo! adressbook

I don't use either Windows adresses or Yahoo! adressbook, and don't know nothing about them.

Therefore i guess the only option is Google contacts, so Thelatinist this is why i thought Google had something to do with PKG Backup:

It might very well not be correct, but how i have understood the very small amount of information i have read about PKG Backup, it creates a Contact on you iPhone which contains the "backup" that can reinstall all your Cydia apps.

The information also told me that to backup this Contact i had to sync my contacts with iTunes, and as explained above i don't know how to do this without involving Google - and if involving Google i think it will cause trouble with my "normal" contacts!

I'm not sure about this stuff, so please enlighten me! :)

Choose Windows Addresses. It will save them in the Windows Address Book application on your computer. Then when you re-sync after your restore, it will restore your contacts to your phone (provided you set it up to sync contacts with Windows Addresses).

You could also copy-paste the information in the contact on your iPhone and email it to yourself. When you are done restoring, recreate the contact exactly as it was. I've never tried that but the developer's website says it works.
 
Ah, sounds nice!

I guess the Windows address program can manage to leave my contacts exactly the way they are on my iPhone, and therefore actually be pretty damn useful!

Do you know if it saves all contact data - full names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and even home locations - and doesn't in any way alter them?

I don't have a PC anymore, but I remember Windows Address Book working perfectly syncing with other devices back in the day.
 
Alright, i'll try it out! Guesd it shouldn't be able to **** my iPhone up when they aren't sync'ed yet. Can't i just turn off syncing if it doesn't work properly?

Anyone else, maybe someone with a PC, got a take on this? :)
 
I just checked mine and contact sync has always been off.
I didnt even know it was there actually:D

Are there any success stories with this app posted any where? I've searched a bit....but wondering if anyone has seen some good user feedback.

Thanks to my error of deleting 'Rock Your ...." last night before deleting the apps it installed.....I got to do a complete restore from scratch (~5 hours gone). Boot logo hanging, 1600 errors, iTunes not recognizing iPhone errors, even iTunes not recognizing my latest backup (even though I could see the subdirectory), etc. etc.

I'd love to give this guy the $ if it works!

There is a whole multi-page thread in this forum. I have used PkgBackup numerous times and it has worked perfectly every time. AptBackup has ruined my new JB phone file system however. I do not recommend AptBackup.

+1. AptBackup hasn't ruined my filesystem, but I've tried to use it several times and it has nearly always failed. I now am a loyal Pkgbackup user.

Ok....I must be searching wrong cause using pkgbackup as a keyword for searching entire threads in this forum (hacks) pulls up 2 pages of hits, but none of them are a 'whole multi page thread in this forum'. Most of it hits of it being a must have app (by a lot of the same posters), or using in comparison to 'xyz' app, but nothing multi page.

So....switching over to advanced search option and doing a similar search on the whole MR forums bring up almost the exact same search results.

And even doing a search of the whole MR forums with pkgbackup being in the title brings up ONE thread.

Maybe my monitor is too big or my glasses aren't working or something. The longest thread on just pkgbackup is the pkgbackup vs aptbackup thread, and it's 28 posts.

Don't get me wrong, looks very promising. Will probably try it out, but was hoping for more info.

Maybe a developer topic/question....but how does it work in conjunction with MobileMe? I've got contacts syncing turned off in iTunes...if I enable it, it is going to try to put this 'contact' that it creates on my MBP copy of Address Book for example?

That's the thread, just 2 pages (but it is more than a single page as I remembered) It is a multi-page thread in this forum. Sorry if my description annoyed you. I can't be expected to retain precise details about the number of posts on an old thread. Just trying to give you more info. Next time I will remember to be very vague.

I think the consensus of opinion is clearly in favor of PkgBackup, but of course you should keep looking if that is not enough info for you.

Got it to work with Windows.. Since i use Vista (crap) they are all stored as .contact files, which is actually pretty nice in this case..

Any idea if i can copy the PKG Backup.contact file to an other folder, delete the PKG Backup from my iPhone for this time and then just do the same thing everytime i backup!?

Sounds like a good idea. Where would the PKGBackup file reside on the iPhone and what would it labeled?

I may give this a try, I was never crazy about having PKGBackup as a contact.

Guess the iPhone contact file would disappear.. The PKGBackup will therefore not be on the iPhone itself, but as this file on your computer.. Which would be fine since you will just copy that contact back to your iPhone if it ****s up and you need to use PKGBackup to restore all the Cydia apps..

Anyone knows if i'm all wrong about the above?

You would have to put the contact back into Windows Address Book and re-sync. But that should work.
 
That sounds good, I'm gonna go ahead and do the same.
Pkgbackup will definetelly make things easier next time I upgrade or restore firmware.

Tryed the thing with backing up and then moving the Contact file in Windows to an other folder.. Works like a charm - no PKG Backup contact in iPhone, but when i move it back to the Windows Addresses folder and sync it appears again - FLAWLESS! ;)

By the way, do anyone know what the "Include layout" button in PKG Backup actually does? Back ups the customized layouts in your Cydia apps or what?
