other than potentially ebay, any one know of a retail outlet that sells this ancient game for the Mac? And would you anticipate any issues playing it on the latest mbp's?

I already have it for the PC, but it requires xp or lower to run, and I was looking at bootcamping win7 home which doesn't have an xp mode.

just a shot in the dark, googled pages and pages and couldn't find it available anywhere.

I got mine from eBay years ago. And no, it won't play on any Mac made within the last several years or so. (Not without messing around with SheepShaver anyway, which is an emulator that requires getting ahold of Mac OS 9 or earlier.)

I already have it for the PC

In that case I'd suggest trying Crossover Games, where it has a gold rating for HOMM III compatibility.

For the Mac version -- good luck, and it's classic only, so it wouldn't be much use on current machines.

For the PC version -- get a full, legal, DRM-free copy of the game for $10 from GOG and play it either in Crossover Games or in a virtual machine. Single player works flawlessly in the current version of Crossover but multiplayer doesn't seem to work at all because it uses some old obscure Microsoft networking protocol. The entire game (single player and multiplayer) worked flawlessly in VMware Fusion 2, but unfortunately, Fusion 3 messed up some aspects of the graphics drivers and at the moment HOMM3 has some really annoying glitches. I don't have Parallels so I can't speak to that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it runs just fine there.
