okay I am doing early research on this as i will not do this upgrade for a while. I have a 2.8 quad 2010 I am putting in a hex core late 2011 or spring of 2012.

where to buy just the hex core and the exact part number ? second any noise on a hex 3.6 ? or a hex 3.2 that would work. even a 3.8?

my goal on this mac pro is to make it have ;

1)a hex core 3.33ghz
2) 2 intel gen3 600gb ssd in raid0 optical bay
3) 4 3tb hhds
4) 12gb ram.

remember I am more of a dedicated hobbyist. so the ram becomes less important to me.

I thought you already had 12GB's of RAM?

As for CPU... Assuming all SP Mac Pro's use the same cooling, you can stick any CPU in there assuming it's the right slot. Mainly cause the 3.33Ghz has the highest TDP at 130W in the family of Westmeres - thus, any CPU will work with the same cooling as the hexacore.

But yes, the 3.46Ghz will be out soon, but it seems like it'll only come out for Dual configurations (X5*** designation) and as a Core i7 Extreme. I don't think it matters if you put a DP processor all by itself, but they're pretty expensive compared to their SP counterparts.

There is a 3.46GHz part coming, that may be the last one before Sandy Bridge.

You can find all the information on http://ark.intel.com/

thank you I have been googling around and found it about 2 mins ago. i have this link.

seems to be a w3690 model

this is good news for me it should drive the price down on the w3680 hex 3.33 model since i only have a quad 2.8 moving to a hex 3.33 will be far more then enough speed boost for me. I found 1050 price for a w3680 at macmall. I also see used quad 2.8's selling for 250 on ebay. so if i did this today I would be out 800 bucks.

a 2.8 and a 3.33 at the apple store are 1200 apart.

if the difference between buying a hex 3.33 w3680 and selling a quad w3530 goes down to 400 or 500 this summer. It would be a good time to do the upgrade.

There is a seller in eBay (Taiwanese I think) who sells W3680 for 899$. Not available atm but keep checking

yes I have the ram

I have the 3tb hdds.

so I need wait for the intel 3rd gen ssd's and shop around for the 6 core upgrade.
