I've seen more iPads wonder wild carried in cases but not being read in public. I wonder if it's a little safer to carry in public now.

I won't use it on a subway yet, but I'd like to use it in a shared relaxing place like the stairs in Times Square while people-watching. I have only used it in my neighborhood park and rooftop.

Where are you comfortable or not comfortable using your iPad?

As for the subway, it really depends on what city you are in. If the traffic is not that busy, I use iPad to read books.

My favorite places to use iPad are Starbucks, Public Library, and during traveling by bus or airplane.

I seldom use iPad while at church - it seems a little inappropriate to use during the worship but I use it during the bible study or at other times.

I most likely wont be using my iPad in bathtubs, showers and swimming pools.
Otherwise, I think anywhere else is probably OK.

I live in Queens NY and I took it out for a brief moment while riding on the R train.

I don't use it on the train because I don't want to look like I'm showing off, but that feeling is starting to fade now that the new iPhone 4 is taking up the spotlight.

will use:
home
bathroom (in ziplock to keep clean)
public places with wifi
school

wont use:
my job
any place it may get dirty or damaged (unless its in the 2 gallon ziplock LOL)

Will use:
Home
School
Car
Places with wifi
Store while waiting for my girlfriend to pick out shoes or other random clothes

Wont use:
Six flags
Backyard pool
Work

Although I agree with your idea on the new iPhone 4 taking the spotlight, I still, however feel that the iPad will be considered a "Show off" device and a potential eye catcher in places like the NY subway. Having lived in the city my whole life, I can certainly say that the lower class and much of the poverty that still, unfortunately, exists in NY will find the iPad to be highly attractable. I'm not comparing this to a Rolex, please do not misunderstand, however a device like the iPad is still in the "want" list of many people.

To answer the op:
Where would I use the iPad:
Home
Work
Car (while waiting for many different reasons)
Library
Public Park
Boring graduation, 50yr old Bday, Anniversary parties (unless mine).
Bathroom (I need entertainment while I'm sitting)

Where I wouldn't use the iPad:
Subway
Amusement Parks (Where do you expect to keep it? Locker?)
While driving (I do not believe in the iPad Dash board)
Shower
Places with lots of children (I cannot trust their cute yet jittery hands)

Ummm. Use it at (cough)work(cough) all the time. iPad is great for watching live afternoon news during lunch and sneaking in World Cup while working.

I will not use it in public places where I'm easily distracted, don't want to lose it.

I'm so glad I found this thread, I'm agree the new iPhone is taking the spotlight now as we sell them and are sold out of them at work.

The one thing I've repeatedly heard about the iPad, is that the device is "douche" written all over it. Everone knows I have one yet wonders why they never see me with it and its because of this.

I remember the summer of 2007 I moved from los Angeles to china and remember seeing the long line at the apple store; in china this American guy had the first iPhone with him and he thought he was the coolest,. The result was everyone thought he was so lame cause he was obviously showing off...now, I'm not saying us iPad owners are but let's face it, the device makes us look so pompous while everyone around us is using a newspaper or laptop to read their news.... Of course when everyone got the iPhone it just became a normal standard thing to see people with iPhones around.. I've heard from numerous friends that have held and played with my iPad that it is much more than just a big iPod touch and they truly want one...but not just yet, not until it becomes like the iphone where it seen everywhere and I kinda agree.

Of coure the argument can be made why would you care what others think anyways? but the truth is I don't wanna be that guy...and when I use it when I'm out and about I don't think I am. (we even have a long running joke at our work where we sell phones that we smooth talk the customer into buying phones while the whole time we wear gold necklaces jotting down customer notes on our iPad, offering them 20% off a refrigerator if they buy two smart phones. We don't even sell fridges!)

As for the places I use and don't use mine are:

Library
Home
Bathroom
Car - I use mine here a lot
Hotels/Vacation (mbp stays @ home)

Places I won't use it:
School
Mcdonalds
Party
Walking down the street
The mall
Etc

Of course though, if I need to access some kind of information whether it be email, omnifocus, webpage, documents, PDF, etc...I'll open it up no matter what.

I wouldn't use it on the NYC subway either. Not so much because of theft, but conspicuous consumption. Most people can't afford it yet (my work bought it for me) but they'd like to have it. As it becomes more widespread I may take it out more often.

I will use it any where except near my families. They are trying to take it away.

Now that I have a case I can keep a tight grip on, and have figured out the ergonomics of how to use it while squished on either side, I've been using mine on the NYC subway. I had qualms about looking like a conspicuous consumer, but I need to work during that hour in transit, I boughht this thing for that purpose, so I'm working. Also, with a case I don't feel like I might drop it or get it snatched out of my hands. I am much more careful about that now, I assure you--see my sig.

I also use it in the bathtub, but I think that's probably a bad idea.

So far I've used it almost everywhere I have ever been since I got it. I have no problem taking it out of my bag while in line waiting for food, or kids, or my wife, etc.

As long as the place is not dangerous and potential damaging to my iPad, I will use it. I bought it to use, not sit in a bag or at home. :D

About the only place so far I wouldn't use it is at the gym. I don't generally hang out in places where I'd fear someone would steal it.

Anyone who thinks that walking around with an ipad signals "douche" is themselves a "douche".

I am betting you are very young and very concerned about your fragile image. If your self image was stronger you would not care about "being that guy".

When i get my iPad i will be using it at home, on the train and most often, at Work.

I often work out of the studio and the iPad will be coming along with me to be used as an organiser, note taker, brainstormer & idea sketching, work portfolio and as a viewer for photo's as they are taken.

It will basically take the place of the 13" macbook we use for these purposes as portability takes precedence over raw power. We have higher specced laptops and mac pro's for the real work.

I'm probably the biggest douche of all. I took it to work once but only to have a fellow empoyee install a second invisible shield for me...

...currently I'm at a Hampton Inn right now and am toying away on an iPad, some fellow business men I just met threw a party and a few of them brought their matchbooks* and PCs and I brought my iPad; of course I was the odd man out...it's just the way it's gonna be for the new few months...iono, I feel I know Enough about my social surrounding to feel confident when and when not to whip to out my iPad, but then again, I'm trying to get laid at my very young age.

MacBook* lol

I use mine at work all the time. Daily, for up to several hours per day. But I do actual work with it, not just play games. And mine isn't the only one I've seen at work, either.

If people can use their Kindles, iPhones and expensive laptops wherever they please, I have no problem using my iPad where and when I think it reasonable. I doubt I'd go waving it around on a subway, but neither would I wave anything else of value around on a city subway. Irrelevant for me anyway - I live in the 'burbs.

I'm 40, a successful professional and married with 3 kids. I couldn't care less if some 18 year old twerp thinks I'm douchy for using my iPad in public (while he talks on the iPhone or BlackBerry is mommy and daddy pay for). I don't have an "image" I need to impress people with. I don't show off the iPad like "look what I can afford" but I'm not afraid of keeping to myself and using it where I need to.

I just had to come back and say this morning at the Hampton Inn I saw a guy, a dad really, with his daughters and he had his iPad open, as did I. We spoke for a bit, he told me he brought the iPad on his trip to Cali instead of his laptop and was serving him well. I told him I was on a business trip, didn't really need it for anything work related this particular weekend but it was fun for checking my email and browsing the web...

The most interesting aspect of our ipad convo was how he had his completely naked and I had a case for it, invisible shield and a griffin leather carrier thing. He said he preferred his iPad naked, while I said I liked mine without scratches or marks. He said they were inevitable and showed me a nick or two on his already..mine didn't have any and told him I plan on reselling mine a month or two before the second gen comes out to purchase that one...when another guy in the lobby saw us talking, saying something along the lines of, "you apple fan boys with your shiny plastic products.."

Lol, we then each grabbed our ipads and cheered them as you would wine. :p
