For an example, my HP has the display hinge on top of the casing and the bottom of the display runs from the display hinge.

On my macbook pro (unibody), the display hinge is on the top of the case BUT the bottom of the display extends past the display hinge. So when I place it on the desk, the whole laptop has to be placed evenly to avoid hitting the bottom of the display on the desk surface.

Who has a desk that isn't even?

????
The desk is even. When you place your laptop on your desk, do you do it evenly? With my HP, I don't always make sure it's even placement but with my MBP, I have to make sure it's even placement to avoid hitting the display.

I'm sorry, English isn't my native language, I thought I was rather good at it but I didn't understand your post.

Edit: Ah with he second explanation I understood! Yes you have discovered a mayor design flaw of apples portables, mail it to steve and jonny right now!

Don't worry, I don't understand either

Yes, I play my MBP evenly on my desk, and the display doesn't hit the desk, I have the MBP Classic though, not the Unibody, Although looking at the design, it hasn't changed a whole lot compared to mine, so I really don't understand what you're saying.

I'm pretty sure if this was a common design flaw there would be a whole lot more threads on it detailing how people have "irreparably damaged" their desk.

Fancy taking some pictures, or video to show what you mean?

I've got cheap IKEA desks that are totally warped.:(

Clues in the titles :p

Are you saying that you can't tilt the screen back because the bottom of the display casing hits the table?

I think he may be putting his laptop - already open - on his desk. He is not
putting his closed laptop on the desk and then opening it.

It might be an issue with your particular unit. I have the 15" unibody MBP and the display hinges are fine when on a desk. Are the pads on the bottom of the notebook not raising it enough above the surface?

Well, the display is not touching the desk. The problem is that most of the time, when I place a laptop on a desk, I usually put it at a slant (the side with the display goes down first at an angle). So placing it like this, while it works fine for any other laptop, may not work for the unibody MBP because it might hit the display on the desk.

You are doing it wrong.:) You gotta put the precious Mac down on the table tenderly with both of your hands grabbing the both edges of the machine.

Is that a big problem? Haha.

Placing the macbook pro on a desk, bad design?

I think placing the macbook pro on my desk gives the setup a good design:

Not sure what kinda of table your talking about but my 17" UMBP can have the lid open at any angle it allows and it does not touch the desk, counter or any level surface I place it on.

If your UMBP does you should probably talk to Apple because it's not normal :)

I'm laying in bed with the Logitech Lapdesk and from any angle I tried to put my unibody MacBook Pro on there, I still don't get what problem you're having  I also tried it on my table (I just had to stand up to do it, cause my table is a meter away from my bed  ) and still was not able to figure it out.

Off topic but what is the stand you have for your iPhone? It looks sweet and would go well on my desk along with my mStand too.

I's called... xStand not mStand

From http://www.just-mobileonline.com/index_en.html

It works for the iPhone 3G 2G & iPod Touch 1G 2G
Do you have to post this everywhere, even when it isn't even relevant?
The OP is asking the question if a Unibody MacBook Pro gives a bad design setup. But i think it's not.

Really, there's no big deal with the edge of the display case touching for a moment, so long as you're not body-slamming your laptop to your desk...
