Plan on purchasing new iMac...

Hey all,

I'm planning on purchasing a new 21.5" iMac base model. I have a Macbook, but it's 4 years old, and starting to dive a bit...

I just have a few questions...firstly, I have an external hard drive. I back my Macbook up all the time. When I get my iMac, how do I go about getting all the stuff on the hard drive to the iMac? Will things like Microsoft Office get pushed over as well, along with programs like Vuze and VLC?

Since I'll be getting the newest iMac that Apple just recently released, are there any known screen yellowing issues, or loud humming/buzzing with these new machines? What are my chances of getting a perfect iMac....?

When setting up your new iMac, you'll be presented with its Migration Assistant. Have your new machine and your old Mac connected (Ethernet recommended) and inform the Migration Assistant as to which files need to be copied.

It's really simple.

Wait, either I'm not running on enough sleep, or I'm not really understanding this at all.

I get the iMac, set it up next to my Macbook. Hook an ethernet cable between the two computers? Or can i just hook the hard drive up to the iMac because I have stuff on the external HD that won't fit on the Macbook....

1- When you're first setting up your new iMac, you'll be presented with the option of migrating your old Mac's stuff over. You can do this either by hooking up the old Mac via Firewire or Ethernet (as mentioned above) or, instead of hooking up another Mac, you can merely hook up your external drive and choose the option of transferring your data from "a Time Machine backup". The latter seems like the easier option, and your Mac will walk you through all the steps. Just make sure you back up from your laptop one last time with Time Machine, then fire up your new iMac and choose the "...from Time Machine" option. It should transfer everything including Office and all other apps - as long as their normally backed up on Time Machine.

But if your external drive is not using Time Machine (i.e. you just back up manually), then I suppose you're going to have to go with the first option (migrate directly from the laptop), and once you're done with that, then manually select those other files that are on your external HD and copy those to the iMac.

2- If you read this forum and others, you'll see plenty of reports of problems (I don't use the wrong word "issues") with the new Macs, including yellowing screens and loud hard drives (if it's abnormally loud I don't know). My 5-day old 27" i7 has the yellow tint and I'm still unsure about returning it partly because of the hassle and partly for the fear of getting a replacement with even more problems. I haven't decided yet, but the yellow is just getting more and more annoying. Of course I don't mean to scare you, it's an incredible machine, but the problems do appear to be there for some.

I do use time machine regularly...so I guess I'll do that option. Thanks for the information...I really appreciate it...

Hopefully I can snag a perfect iMac...is it possible to check in store?
 
EXTREMELY HAPPY!!! :D

I'm transferring all files now, and as far as I can see, no yellowing, no dust, no dead pixels...

It's such a sexy machine.
 
I'm using it now...there is a slight yellow tinge, but it's not a huge deal...it's barely noticeable, and i don't any photo/video editing, so I'm not concerned. there are no dead pixels, and there is no loud hard drive or fan...it's awesome..

it's close to perfect, and i'm extremely pleased!

The migration worked flawlessly, and everything made it onto my computer as promised...
