Planning to buy an iMac today... last minute questions, please.

Hello folks,

I've decided to go for an iMac. I was previously looking at MacBooks, but I've decided to go all out.

My decision concerns whether to get the top-end 21.5" (the i3 with the HD 5670) or the top-end 27" machine (the i5 with the HD 5750). I think the issue that concerns me is how well the 1440p display of the 27" iMac will deal with lower resolution graphics - will they look smeared or fuzzy?

My needs are largely productivity, with some gaming on the side. Any thoughts on this matter are welcome.

"Lower", I said.

1080p video, or running more demanding games at less than native resolution.

Do you know this from experience? If you own a 27" iMac, how close do you usually sit to the screen? I would think that's surely a factor...
 
You know! Before you buy it, just play with one, go to "system preferences" -> "display" and change the resolution. I think you will see what you need to know..
 
Actually besides gaming and movies, there's not much that you will do full screen. With gaming, you can adjust the resolution. When watching movies, you'll have a bigger distance between your screen and your eyes than normal usage, and you won't notice anything significantly. Depending on the scaler your software uses, the image can actually be better than a normal 27" full HD screen.

I went with the 27" i5. In addition to the academic discount on the machine, which amounted to almost £200, Apple Care was £34 rather than £139. Can't complain about that...

My recommendation is wait until October 20th. Apple is holding an event. They will be guaranteeing to announce new iLife 2010.
 
I appreciate the recommendation mate, but I bought it this afternoon. Missing out on the new iLife suite... well, I'm not particularly fussed about that.

But thanks, all the same.

New iLife suite is not confirmed although I certainly expect it would be announced at next week's event.
