Remember me, I said the top enclosure around the keyboard is plastic,,,,
Well we took a 15" PB apart, and it turns out to be plastic. Sice APPLE has basically not changed the design it is plastic on the MBPs too.

Take a coin and tip lightly against the housing and the top enclosure and you'll be able to tell.

Sorry about that.:(

Can anyone confirm this finding? I always wondered why the wrist rest would pit after a couple years.. perhaps it is really because of the underlying plastic inside?

The only part of the upper case that is plastic is the thin piece of molding.

See for yourself, does this look plastic to you?

Looks, sounds, and feels like metal to me--MBP 17".

It is painted, though, which might be the source of the pitting, and may be where the confusion comes from. In fact, I accidentally scraped a bit of the paint off the inner lip just below the command key, and it is unquestionably shiny metal underneath. There are no seams between that spot and the entire rest of the upper case, so there's conclusive proof if you dont' want to bother dismantling your laptop or scratching a perfectly good paint job to check.
