Only the more expensive DVD camcorders (which record in MPEG-2 (native DVD)) can convert to DV and output to a firewire.
What my DVD camcorder does on Windows and Mac OS X is that it looks like an external DVD recorder when hooked up via USB. Just finalize the DVD, then you can use Handbreak to extract it to an mp4 file to use in iMovie or whatever...
