VLC Player for iPad is coming out soon, that's your best bet probably. I cant wait. My File converter throws a fit trying to convert certain formats.

If you can dig up a copy of VisualHub (which has been discontinued), that's your best best for now.

A good compromise would be to use something like AviVideo which can convert "avi" video files.

Can one Handbrake an .avi? Then you could just add it to iTunes - no need for an extra app.

Never heard of oplayer, thanks! Btw, if you have a lot of media but not that much space, streaming is a good option. Especially since streaming is easier to manage than syncing it through.

Get a converter, and convert it to MP4.

My understanding the reason Apple does not support .avi on iDevices is the amount of processor power required to decode the video and play it back. Causes more battery drain than say H.264 or similar codecs.

The current version of Handbrake no longer supports AVI. You'll have to use an older version.

The easiest way is to get AirVideo. You can either transcode the AVI on the fly or convert it for use later. It'll even put the converted file into iTunes for you. Worth the 2 or 3 bucks.

Cinexplayer works fine on my iPad, supports .avi files without any converting required.

True, but the native video playing apps don't support .avi.
