what is the best and easiest program to put on the iPad that would enable me to play .avi movies on my iPad?

VLC Player for iPad is coming out soon, that's your best bet probably. I cant wait. My File converter throws a fit trying to convert certain formats.

Dude, there is a search function that you can use to ask and receive answers to this question that has been asked a million times.

OK "Dude", I already know that, was looking for more updated info, "Dude".

Oplayer HD and cineXplayer allow you to import avi files and play them, with vga output supported as well, none of this streaming or re-encoding nonsense required.

Never heard of oplayer, thanks! :) Btw, if you have a lot of media but not that much space, streaming is a good option. Especially since streaming is easier to manage than syncing it through.

Handbrake, convert the file, add it to iTunes and sync.

Air Video, stream the file to iPad from computer, must have client software on computer.

The current version of Handbrake no longer supports AVI. You'll have to use an older version.

The easiest way is to get AirVideo. You can either transcode the AVI on the fly or convert it for use later. It'll even put the converted file into iTunes for you. Worth the 2 or 3 bucks.
