hey all, ive got a macbook pro that has optical out, and a logtiech 5.1 z-680 set that has optical in. I want to conenct the MBP up to play evrything in 5.1, not just DVD's. On my Windows box, i use software called CMSS from creative to 'fake' emulate' 'upmix' my audio/video files to 5.1, what kind of software can you use for that on a Macintosh? thanks

Those speakers do have dolby/ pro logic II.
Just hit the "effect" button on the control pod until you see
dolby/ pro logic II music or movie.

Otherwise, I don't know of any software available on the mac.

I had an apple powermac with an m-audio sound card with digital output, I also have the logitech z-680, Let me just tell you this, there is no software out there even for the pc that will work even close to as well as the built in dolby Pro logic II decoder of the z-680's or any other reciever with dolby pro logic decoder.

ok cool so this will let me play my mp3's 'upmixed' to 5.1? thanks

Yes, thats what dolby/pro logic II does, it takes a stereo signal source and processes/upmix it into 5.1

does anyone know of any 2.1 computer speakers that has optical in?

if not i was thinking of getting one of these cheap 2.1 speakers for my macbook pro: Creative Inspire T3030 or JBL Creature II

which one would be better?

I don't know of any optical 2.1 computer speakers.
There is no real benefit of optical 2.1, if its going to be for your MBP and you
want 2.1, then analog is just fine...otherwise get a surround setup with optical
in. Go with which ever you like and what you can afford. Both are budget
systems and both have decent sound. Better yet, go to a local store and give
them a listen.
