Playing music off iPhone through Macbook

I have my big music collection at home on an external
I keep a small portable collection on my laptop
When I plug in my phone to my MB I have to use my portable library but can still see all my songs on my iphone.
Is there a way to play them? They are all grey, and un-selectable.

As a life long mac user and current owner of 3 of them it makes me shudder to say it but is there something similar for windows <shudders>
