Playing optical sound through Mac Mini?

Hey all. I have a Mac Mini and an Xbox 360 S and I am about to come into a very nice amplifier. The amp only has one optical in though so I was wondering if i could plug the Xbox 360 S into the optical in on the Mac Mini and then just have the optical out going to the amp? If so will this affect sound quality in any way?

That might work. However, if the only reason you want to hook the XBox up to the computer is to run sound through it to the amp (due to lack of inputs), I'd be tempted to get a Toslink switch, such as this:

That way, you wouldn't need to worry about your computer being on and routing audio properly (and I'm not even sure it will work).

The Mini is not an optical pass through device. Any output from the Mini has to come from an application program on the Mini.

Does the receiver have HDMI input? Most receivers in the past few years take in audio from HDMI.
