I am trying to run Rift on my macbook pro but it says my graphics card isnt good enough. I'm running this in windows by the way. The graphics "card" that is used when i run windows is a "standard vga graphics adapter".

I just need to download a driver (i believe). but i can not find any downloads.
Any suggestions?

Have you installed the drivers on the mac os dvd ? It contains most drivers needed for windows in bootcamp.

You could also use other drivers (from Ati or Nvidia), but you should add the bootcamp drivers first if you haven't already.

For the OP, as I recall that is the last step of the bootcamp install process.

Install the latest drivers from your card mfr (ATI or Nvidia probably). What model macbook pro do you have?

Any informed opinions on Rift as compared to WoW?

It is a more complex game then WoW. It seems very stable and I'm seeing 30+fps on a Macbook Pro, late 2006 with X1600 graphics. I've only played it for a few hours, but so far I like it enough that I'm switching.

Large diverse zones? I realize if you are just starting out, you may not know...

I haven't delved too far into it myself, but played for a few of the closed betas. If anything, it's a change from the usually WoW-world.

If I'm not mistaken, this week (thurs 17th - mon 21st) is an OPEN beta... hit trion's site and see if you can snag a key and then you can check it out yourself.

Thanks for the suggestion, but most likely I am going to wait for Starwars: The Old Republic. Been taking a break from MMOing it. Rift's advertising, 'You're not in Azeroth anymore' caught my attention and I was wondering how much different it really was. I know about the NPC invasions. :)

And sorry, did not mean to hijack the thread. It was a Rift thread so I thought it would be a good place to ask.

I know this might be a longshot but Will it run on either of my two Mac's?

MBP Early 2008
2.5ghz core 2 duo
2gb ddr2 ram
nvidia geforce 8600m GT (512mb Video Memory)

&

MB Mid 2009
2.2ghz core 2 duo
2gb ram
NVidia gefore 9400m with 256 ram

Thanks in advance!

Id run it on the MBP, those old 8600m GT cards are real powerhouses, if they don't fail (mine did)

It will run on both, i ran the beta on the same spec macbook as you have but with 4GB of ram, the graphical settings will be on LOW though, with the 8600m GT you may be able to get medium settings out of it.

The game is good fun, i am really enjoying it, where as wow felt like a rush to end game this game is nice and new and there is no need to rush just enjoy the game with everyone else, great escapism.

Any informed opinions on Rift as compared to WoW?

Points in favor

1. Its new.

2. Better graphics (depends in you want more realistic or not)

3. More diverse classes (rogues can tank or heal depending on spec for example)

4. Rifts, adds new flavor to leveling as they can randomly appear

5. PvP seems better, but that is mostly because we are still in the anything goes stage

6. Developer feedback is strong in the forums

7. Interface is nearly identical to WOW, like actions bars and the like just with more customization and player friendly features.

Points against

1. No real choice in zones. In your faction you start out in, lets call it zone A. You then go to B, then C, then D, and so on. There really is no choice. Sure you can stay in one zone for far too long but that is pointless. Think of it as WOW where the only starting zones would be Orgimarr and Stormwind.

2. NPCs used cheap form of player animation (LOTRO syndrome as I call it) which means they move stiffly and don't use facial animations. Gives it that creepy doll like effect unlike WOW where all NPCs can do full range of motion players can including emotes

3. Rifts, yeah because they like to open RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW which can be annoying.

4. Rogues, specifically far too many of them exist and the name is meaningless as they can actually be Bards who heals or Rangers who shoot bows and have pets.

5. System requirements are far stiffer than WOW. Set lighting effects to four or less for most Macs

6. Crafting, yeah, like OK, whatever. Its there, but not great. Good for making ALTs stuff.

7. Interface is nearly a clone of WOW - as in, can't they be original for five seconds?

I wouldnt say that the interface being like WoW is a bad point, its very similar to most fantasy MMOs.

I dont think too many rogues are that much of a problem, i mean they can be a stealth class, a ranged class, a pet class, a healer or a tank.

What is daft is that they are named rogues, i dont think you could even class a bard or a tank as a rogue really but there you go.

Crafting is fairly standard for current MMOs ie. its pretty boring and there is no burning need to craft or gather other than to make money.

I would say that the game is worth the £29.99 to play through once, it may take you a month to reach level cap or maybe two but for that sort of money to gametime i would say its pretty good value.

Its too early to say if this game will be able to retain subs like WoW has, if the endgame is good and keeps people interested then i will stick with it, if not then i am happy to level through the game, see the majority of content and then leave for Star Wars in the fall.

Hi guys,
would you think it would run on 2011 MBP (2.7 Ghz, i7, 4GB ram, Intel HD 3000) ?
Want to make sure before buying the game =/

@Nightarchaon & Slickshoes:

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it! My buddy just picked it up for his pc and is enjoying it. I actually got my GF into playing WoW and she loves it, so I want to put this on her macbook I had spoken of. I just hope she can run it at all.

@Slickshoes:
If I can run it on Med. settings that would be great. I'm planning on building a PC as my old home PC is becoming a dinosaur. So to play it on Med until I build the new comp would be great.

Thanks again for all the info and if anyone else is currently playing on any of the two Mac's I posted please share some more feedback with us.

Thanks for the info! Because the last MMO I played for 2.5 years was WoW, as reported very similiar, I'm going to hold off for SW:The Old Republic.

Easily my biggest gripe with the game. But given that once you have a 50 of a class there isn't that much need to make another since you have multiple builds, you probably won't end up leveling that many toons anyway.

If you get caught unaware by a Rift opening you're probably the same person who constantly got killed by the Fel Reaver "sneaking up on you" in WoW.
