I have recently been playing around with ripping some DVDs from my collection to my computer with the intent on playing them on my TV.
I tried using Handbrake, but I did not really like the way it worked. I only got the movie file, with no menus or extras and hard subs.(Unless I am not doing it right)
I then tried Mac the Ripper. I must say this program works great. I get an exact copy of the DVD with full functionality. Menus, subs, extras, etc. are all there. So far my DVD rips work great playing through Front Row on my iMac.
My question now is how can I play my ripped DVDs on my TV? The rips are in a TS file format.
I read that an Apple TV cannot play TS files. Is this still the case? Or has there been an upgrade that will allow the playing of TS files through an Apple TV?
Should I look into hacking an Apple TV? I read that some "Nitro" hack can do this. I'm not really good with advanced computer hacking-type stuff so this might not be a good idea for me.
What about a Mac Mini? Would I just transfer the files to the Mini and play them off Front Row? Or is there a way to stream or share the files on a network? What would be the least powerful Mini I could use to do this kind of setup?
Lastly, what about a PS3? I know it has some media playback abilities. Would it be a viable option? I have thought about getting one, and If I could use it to play back my ripped DVDs that would help seal the deal.
So far I just have my iMac. I don't have a router or any other equipment at the moment. I will probably be looking to buy around Christmas. I just want to make sure I can do what I want to do for the lowest cost, with the least amount of headaches.
