I know this is a long shot, this being primarily a Mac forum but...
I have the original Half Life for PC that I purchased a longgg while back. Recently I tried to install it on my PC (running XP) but nothing happens when I click install. I looked online and found some posts where people said if you had Steam you'd be able to install and play it on XP, but info was lacking. I figured that maybe I could download Half Life via Steam and then activate it with my original serial number. But I've found no way to download, unless I pay for it up front and while it's not a lot ($10), I'd prefer not to pay for a game I all ready have.

I do have a support question posted with Steam Support but in the meantime, anyone here familiar with Valve's Steam have a suggestion for a solution?
Thanks!

On the Steam menubar, click games>activate product. Enter the serial number and if all goes well it should be added to your account!

I was going to do this for my HL1 CD but then Valve went and had a sale and HL1 was $1.

Hmm, I tried to activate using the serial that came with my original HL CD and it said duplicate product and would not activate. I guess I need to check with Steam support.

When was the sale? When I checked yesterday it was $9.99.

November last year. But yea I'd get onto Steam about the duplicate serial number. There are lots of HL1 code generators out there, looks like someone got your code before you did! But they're quite good at solving this, same thing happened to a friend (this was years ago though). Took about 5 days to get the game added to his account.

Around Christmas time they were also selling off Blue Shift and Opposing Forces for 99p each (I think?), either way they were very cheap and I snatched them up too. They'll probably do the same again in a couple of months.
