Is it possible to create a playlist that chooses a number of things to include and a number of things to not include? And if so could you please give an example... thanks.

Have you looked through the possible options for a smart playlist? I'd love to be more specific, but your post wasn't exactly clear on what it is you are trying to do.
Well I could be going totally nuts, but I swear that you used to be able to make a smart playlist and say something like artist is Abba and artist is whom ever but do not use genre equals soundtrack.
but now if I say genre not equal soundtrack every song not a sound track adds to the list...
I used to have a smart playlist that was audio books and such and I used to say do not use that list... now I can not figure out how to do that again...
