I usually sync one of my playlists by Date Added (newest to oldest).

But since upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPhone, no matter how I set it on my iTunes it only syncs the playlist as Oldest to Newest. If I arrange my playlist by artist on iTunes then it follows that but when I switch it back to Date Added it only goes oldest to newest & not the other way around. A very weird issue.

Also to note I don't have the same issue with my iPad which also has iOS 5. Both syncing on the same Mac.

You should right click on the playlist name in the left column and select "copy to play order" and that should do it but there has been many issues with syncing music. I had to create a new playlist.

Purchased Playlist not synching by Date Added

I'm having the exact same issue on my iPhone 4. I always sync my PURCHASED playlist by date added, Newest to Oldest. However since upgrading to iOS 5, it only syncs Oldest to Newest. This is very annoying because I have purchased 700 songs and I now must scroll to the bottom of the list to play my new songs.

Are there any remedies? I hope Apple is aware of this issue and fixes this bug.

I've been having the same problem, searching all one the net. Here's what I have: Go into iTunes, set playlist in "Date Added" order. Right click on that playlist and "Copy to Play Order". Now click on the far left number column, the order should stay the same. Resync to your iPhone and it should be in this order. Also note that when you add new music to the playlist you have to press "Copy to Play Order" again, otherwise the new songs will not stay in order when you press the number column.

It fixed my problem! Thank you! I could hug you right now!

Apple have really ruined the iPod app for iPhones & iPad's in more ways than one. Hope they sort it out.

Will try the fix that SabresFan gave and get back with the results. Right now I have sorted them by Date Modified (works for some reason) which is the next best thing to date added.

Found Solution

I have found a solution when making the smart playlist check the box that says limit to _____ items. And put in a large number, doesn't matter just more music than you will have. And for selected by pick "most recently added"

And do the other things as normal, (sort the column in iTunes by date added)

Hit sync.

That's it, should work!
