Playlists

In anticipation of the UK iPhone release, I've created a new playlist in iTunes called "iPhone", and put about 6.5-7GB of songs on there. I'll then just sync the iPhone with only this playlist.

But, I was thinking the other night - I have a Dension Icelink iPod interface for my car, which I will also be using with my iPhone. Pressing buttons 1-6 on the car stereo selects one of the first 6 playlists, meaning you can quickly switch between them without having to browse/touch the iPod/iPhone itself.

On my iPod, I have these 6 playlists set up as "new", "rock/pop", "dance/electronic" etc. So basically I now have 7 playlists in iTunes - those 6, and the new "iPhone" one. The 6 other playlists just have songs taken from the "iPhone" playists in them anyway though.

My question is this:-

Will ALSO syncing the other 6 playlists to my iPhone send duplicate songs, meaning that if the same song is in "iPhone" and "new" (which it will be), the song will go across twice, meaning also syncing the other 6 playlists will take up a lot more data? Or is the iPhone/iTunes clever enough to know it's just the same song in a different playlist, and only transfer 1 file?

Playlists are only lists that reference songs ... even if you have "duplicate" songs in multiple playlists, there won't be more than one copy on your iPod.

from my experience auto syncing your ipod won't duplicate songs, but manually dropping in playlists that have multiple songs in them will, so just make sure you auto sync and you'll be ok.

Well, i've been wondering the same thing.

I made a playlist called "iPhone" just like the OP, and I dropped about 50 albums in there, from the Album place in iTunes.

Now, I could just drag all the music OUT of the iPhone playlist, and into the iPhone, and find all my music by Album, Composer, or Artist.. but I also have a bunch of playlists that I want to put on the iPhone so I can find songs that way too.

I wish iTunes had multiple libraries, so that I could make a brand new library called "iPhone" with it's own playlists and everything. But as it is, if I drag all those 50 albums in, and then drag all my playlists in as well, will it really just reference the songs that have already been put on, or will it put duplicates of them?

I'm confused

Right now i've got a 40GB iPod Photo which works great for me, and it's more than half full. When I get an iPhone, I need to be able to store all my music on it, as well as have room for a handful of feature length films.

4GB or 8GB is completely unreasonable and unusable for me. I don't care how long I have to wait. I'm not in desperate need of a cell phone. I mean, I could use a cell phone now, and the internet feature is definitely very attractive, but I can't operate with that amount of storage space.

Is anyone else waiting for an iPhone that doesn't limit the user with an unreasonably tiny storage capacity?

Well then be confused. I'm poking around these boards, asking questions, because I'm contemplating a 16GB iPhone purchase, when those are released in the coming months.

Can anyone answer my question about the albums and playlists?

Well the answer is you don't drag and drop music onto the iPhone. You can't manually manage music but only with playlist.

Make a master non smart playlist called iPhone. Put music you want in there and sync that with the iPhone.

Now I have a few smart playlist also on my iPhone. If any music in these smart playlists are also in my master playlist it does not put duplicates on the iPhone but just includes them in both playlist.

Also if conditions are to remove the song from one of the smart playlist and the song is in the master it will take the song out of the smart playlist but leave it on the iPhone and in the master.

Hope that makes sense. If not I'll try to clarify more.
