Apparently it's coming to kick the iPhone's ass.
engadgetpspphone1-1288145209.jpg

It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches.
We'll just have to wait and see. This is going to make stuff interesting.

It is pretty ugly.
And I'm not really sure how many people want to combine intense gaming and a phone... the iPhone has nice just enough gaming ability IMO. If I wanted anything more I would get a full console. But then again I'm not much of a gamer.
Sonys TVs are just about the only beautiful things they make anymore. Their laptops used to be quite nice, but even those have fallen behind the ranges from the likes of HP.

Wow, were the sony developers on crack. Looks like they just glued an android phone to the back of a PSP. There's a definite lack of seamless integration in the hardware design, looks more like bolt on and hope for the best

That looks pretty ugly too.

Relax guys, it's a prototype - possibly built by hand.
I, for one, am excited for the PSP phone and can't wait for it to come out :)

They will sell alot of these phones even if it is ugly, which I don't think it is. Same thing with the Microsoft phones. Apple should try to make a Nintendo variant or buy Sony.

That is hands down one of the ugliest handhelds I've seen in a long time. Egads.

I can't see how sony would be able to sell too many.

Adults will be embarrassed, in part because its ugly but also because its a PSP. I don't know too many people willing to whip that out in a business meeting.

You could put name in the link to be better.
To me the name changing in the link reeks of standard fanboyism. No where in the article does it say that it is trying to be an iPhone killer. Nor has sony ever come out and said something like that.
From what I can tell on the PSP phone Sony is not trying to go Head to head with the iPhone and not expecting to have a huge market share with it.
They know they are targeting a smaller demographic of their PSP owners who would like to have a phone combined with the PSP.

As a gaming device this will be better than the iPod touch or the iPhone in terms of what it can run and they types of games.
Now I do not see it being as good of a media device but it is supposed to be a PSP first and a phone 2nd.

Makes no difference what the intent is. It'll inevitably be compared to the iPhone, as is the norm.

I think the link title was chosen for sarcasm, anyway, which would be entirely appropriate, considering this latest monstrosity from Sony.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

If it gets as much software support as the PSP did, that thing is dead on arrival.

Nope, everyone will do it. It's the natural thing to do. The only exception might be the geek contingent on tech sites, but they're in the minority anyway. Just look at the Nintendo DS - the articles mentioning the iPhone as its competitor are legion, and there's no shortage of consumers who have responded with their own experiences ("my son chose an iPod Touch instead, etc").

The media, tech media in particular, and even everyday users will do it as a matter of course. Every mobile device released that is even remotely a smartphone or a gaming device will be subjected to an unhappy comparison with the device most closely resembling it in form factor and/or usage by Top Dog Apple. Hell, comparisons have been made between the iPad and notebooks!

So someone will do it, the story will get legs and will be reproduced around the net, and the next thing you know Apple's near-insurmountable mindshare will kill this thing with fire even before it has a chance. Not that this thing actually deserves one. But the market will take care of the matter in due course, anyway.

It doesn't matter whether the comparisons are appropriate or logical. They will happen.

Look, even roadbloc made the comparison - probably unwittingly. That's all it takes.

I actually first was this on another more PC orientated forum which was comparing it to the iPhone.
